Biography

Short Description

Saint Bucolus (Greek: Βουκόλος; also spelled Bucolos, Boukolos, or Vucolus) is an early Christian saint venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. According to ecclesiastical tradition he was a disciple of the Apostle John and was appointed by John as the first bishop of Smyrna, a major port city in the Roman province of Asia (modern İzmir in western Turkey). The Apostolic Constitutions, a church-order compilation whose present form dates to the late fourth century but which draws on earlier materials, includes Bucolus in a list of bishops said to have been ordained by the apostles, naming him specifically as the bishop of Smyrna ordained by John.

Virtually nothing is known of Bucolus’s personal origins, family, or the length of his episcopate from contemporary or near-contemporary documents. Tradition places him in the late first and early second centuries, during the sub-apostolic period when Christian communities in Asia Minor were consolidating their leadership. Later hagiographical notices state that he discerned the vocation of Polycarp of Smyrna, a younger member of the community who became one of the most significant bishops and martyrs of the second century, and that Bucolus ordained Polycarp as his successor. Polycarp’s long episcopate and martyrdom are far better attested. Bucolus himself is not mentioned in the letters of Ignatius of Antioch, who wrote both to the church of Smyrna and personally to Polycarp, which implies that by the time of Ignatius’s journey toward Rome Polycarp was already bishop.

Bucolus is commemorated on 6 February. The Roman Martyrology records him at Smyrna as the bishop who, after Saint John the Apostle, governed that church with outstanding holiness. The same date is observed in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar. No writings attributed to Bucolus survive, nor is he the subject of an early passio or an extensive legendary cycle. Historians therefore regard the details of his life as resting primarily on later succession lists and martyrological notices rather than on independent second-century testimony. His name does not appear among the martyrs; tradition presents him as having died a natural death after a holy episcopate.

Although historically obscure, Bucolus occupies a symbolic place in the apostolic succession claimed for the see of Smyrna and in the memory of the churches of Asia Minor as a link between the Apostle John and Saint Polycarp. His cult remained modest and largely local. He is typically represented in iconography as a bishop. The years of his birth and death are unknown; he is generally situated at the turn of the first and second centuries and is believed to have died in Smyrna.
