Biography

Short Description

Burchard of Würzburg (also spelled Burkard, Burghard, or Burkhard) was an Anglo-Saxon missionary who became the first bishop of Würzburg in the eighth century. Contemporary sources do not record the year or place of his birth; he is known only to have come from England. He belonged to the generation of English monks who followed Saint Boniface to the Frankish territories in order to preach among the Germanic peoples and to organize diocesan structures. Later medieval tradition presented him as a Benedictine, and he is generally associated with the monastic missionary circles around Boniface. He is thought to have arrived on the Continent in the 730s and to have worked in Franconia before his elevation to the episcopate.

In 741 Boniface, acting with the support of the Carolingian mayors of the palace and with subsequent papal approval from Pope Zachary, established several new bishoprics in central Germany, among them Würzburg. Burchard was consecrated as its first bishop, probably in 741 or 742. The new see was intended to serve eastern Franconia and was placed in the orbit of the metropolitan church of Mainz. Early in his tenure Burchard translated the relics of Saints Kilian, Colman, and Totnan—Irish missionaries martyred at Würzburg toward the end of the seventh century—into a church that served as the cathedral, thereby giving the diocese a local martyrial cult. He took part in the reforming synods of the 740s, notably the Concilium Germanicum of 742 and the Council of Les Estinnes in 743, which sought to enforce clerical discipline, suppress remnants of pagan practice, and align the German church with Roman and Carolingian policy.

Burchard secured papal recognition of his diocese and is associated with the foundation or endowment of monastic houses in the Main valley, including the monastery of Neustadt am Main, which later tradition linked closely to him. After roughly a dozen years as bishop he resigned the see, most likely in 753; Megingoz succeeded him. Burchard spent his last months in monastic retirement, which later accounts locate at Homburg am Main or at Neustadt. He died in 754. His cult took root in Würzburg, where he was remembered as the founding bishop; his feast is observed on 14 October. Relics attributed to him were kept in Würzburg, and he has been regarded as a patron of the city and of the diocese.

The principal medieval life of Burchard, the Vita sancti Burkardi, dates from the twelfth century and cannot be treated as a contemporary witness; it incorporates legend as well as local tradition. Eighth-century evidence for his career is sparse and consists mainly of references in the Bonifatian correspondence, conciliar acts, and later episcopal lists. Even so, his historical role as first bishop of Würzburg and as a collaborator in Boniface’s organization of the church in Germany is not in doubt.
