Biography

Short Description

Cainnech of Aghaboe, known in Ireland as Saint Canice or Saint Kenny and in Scotland as Saint Kenneth, was a sixth-century Irish abbot, monastic founder, and missionary, counted among the so-called Twelve Apostles of Ireland. Traditional accounts place his birth in 515 or 516 at Glengiven (Glenn Geimhin), in the territory of the Ciannachta of Keenaght near present-day Dungiven in County Londonderry. His father, Lughaidh Leithdhearg, was a professional bard of the Corca Loígde who had settled in the north of Ireland; his mother, Adain (also called Maithgemm in some texts), belonged to the local Ciannachta. As a young man he entered the monastic school of Clonard in Meath, then one of the principal centres of learning and ascetic training in the Irish church, and studied under Saint Finnian. The early Irish church of this period was organized around monastic federations rather than the later medieval diocesan system, and Clonard supplied many of the founders who established churches across Ireland and among the Irish settlements in Britain.

After Clonard, Cainnech spent time in Wales at Llancarfan under Saint Cadoc, a connection that illustrates the close sixth-century ties between Irish and British Christianity. He became a close friend of Saint Columba of Iona. Adomnán’s Life of Columba, composed in the late seventh century and among the earliest narrative sources to mention him, records several incidents involving Cainnech: Columba’s prophetic knowledge that Cainnech was approaching Iona through a storm, and the recovery of a staff Cainnech had left behind. Cainnech preached in the west of Scotland and is associated with church foundations there; the island of Inchkenneth (Innis Chonaig) off Mull and numerous Kilkenneth and similar place-names preserve his cult. Later tradition credited him with a commentary on the Gospels, but no such work survives and the attribution cannot be verified.

His principal Irish foundation was the monastery of Aghaboe (Achadh Bhó, “field of the cows”) in the kingdom of Osraige, in what is now County Laois. Aghaboe became a leading church of Ossory and for a period served as the episcopal centre of that see before the role passed to Kilkenny. Cainnech is also associated with a church at Kilkenny (Cill Chainnigh, “the church of Cainnech”), from which the later medieval city and Saint Canice’s Cathedral take their name. Irish annalistic compilations, including the Annals of Ulster, record the rest of Cainnech of Aghaboe in 599 or 600. He is commemorated on 11 October in the Irish martyrologies, including the Martyrology of Óengus. Like other early Irish saints he was venerated by popular acclaim long before the later papal processes of beatification and canonization; no formal canonization by a pope is recorded.

His cult spread in both Ireland and Gaelic Scotland. He is the patron saint of the city of Kilkenny and of the Diocese of Ossory, and he remains closely identified with Aghaboe. A Latin Life of Cainnech survives in later medieval manuscripts and mixes plausible monastic detail with conventional hagiographical motifs; historians therefore treat it with caution and rely more heavily on the annalistic death notice, the independent witness of Adomnán, and the distribution of early church dedications. The picture that emerges is of a well-connected sixth-century monastic founder whose principal lasting marks are the churches of Aghaboe and Kilkenny and a durable cult on both sides of the Irish Sea.
