Biography

Short Description

Caius of Korea is a name that appears in connection with Christian history on the Korean peninsula, but widely available, reliable historical and hagiographical sources do not furnish a verified personal biography with dates, places, or family details. Caius is the Latin form of the Roman praenomen Gaius, a name used from antiquity in the Church and later given as a baptismal name to converts in various mission territories. Beyond the name and the Korean association, standard references do not yield a confirmed identity that can be distinguished from other bearers of the same baptismal name.

Roman Catholicism reached Korea in a distinctive way in the late eighteenth century. Korean Confucian scholars encountered Christian books brought from China and formed a community of believers before any foreign priest had entered the country. Yi Seung-hun was baptized in Beijing in 1784 and returned to baptize others. The Joseon court regarded the new faith with suspicion because it rejected ancestral rites and seemed to challenge the existing social order. Growth of the community therefore occurred under the constant threat of official hostility.

That hostility produced repeated persecutions across the nineteenth century, notably in 1801, 1839, 1846 and 1866. Thousands of Korean Catholics, clergy and laity, men and women, were put to death. The Catholic Church later recognized large groups of these victims as martyrs: 103 were canonized in 1984 and further groups were beatified in subsequent decades. Many of the lesser-known individuals among them survive in the record only as a baptismal name, a Korean family name, and the fact of execution. It is possible that Caius of Korea belongs to this company, but that identification is not established by the sources consulted here.

Without contemporary documents, missionary correspondence, or the acts of a beatification or canonization process that name this specific person, no birth year, death year, place of origin, marital status, or precise circumstances of life or death can be stated. Local Korean church archives, the records of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, or the historical commissions that prepared the Korean martyr causes would be the places to seek further evidence. Until such evidence is brought forward, Caius of Korea remains an obscure figure whose life cannot be reconstructed in detail.
