Biography

Short Description

Calepodius (Latin Calepodius; Italian Calepodio) was a Christian priest of Rome venerated as a martyr in the Catholic Church. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary evidence. He is known chiefly because a major suburban cemetery on the Via Aurelia bore his name from a very early date, and because later Roman liturgical books commemorate him as a priest who shed his blood for the faith. No reliable source records his birth, parentage, or early career. The traditional year of death given in later hagiographical compilations is 232, in the reign of the emperor Alexander Severus (222–235), but that date depends on legendary acts rather than on a document of the third century.

The narrative of his passion belongs to the so-called Passio of Saint Callixtus, a Latin text generally dated to the fifth or sixth century and regarded by modern historians as largely fictitious. In that account Calepodius is a Roman priest who is arrested in a persecution ascribed to Alexander Severus, dragged through the streets of the city, and thrown into the Tiber. His body is said to have been recovered and buried in the cemetery on the Via Aurelia that thereafter took his name. The same legendary cycle associates with him a large group of companions listed in the Roman Martyrology on 10 May: Palmatius, described as a consul, together with his household; Simplicius, described as a senator, with his household; and the spouses Felix and Blanda, along with many others. The alleged persecution under Alexander Severus is not corroborated by contemporary pagan or Christian writers; that emperor is usually judged to have been comparatively tolerant toward Christians. The consular and senatorial titles given to the companions are likewise regarded as hagiographical embellishment.

What can be affirmed on firmer ground is the existence and importance of the burial ground itself. The Coemeterium Calepodii, or Catacomb of Calepodius, lay on the Via Aurelia at about the third milestone, in the area of modern Monteverde, west of the Tiber. The Chronographer of 354 (in the Depositio martyrum) and the Liber Pontificalis record that Pope Callixtus I, who died in 222, was buried in this cemetery rather than in the great cemetery on the Via Appia that also bears Callixtus’s name. That notice shows that the Aurelia cemetery was already a significant Christian site in the early third century and that the name of Calepodius was attached to it from an early period. The association implies that Calepodius was a figure of enough standing—most plausibly a martyr or a notable priest buried there—to give his name to the complex, even if the details of his death cannot be recovered. Archaeological work has identified galleries of the catacomb and remains of a small basilica ad corpus connected with the cult of Callixtus and of Calepodius.

The liturgical cult of Calepodius remained essentially Roman. The Martyrologium Hieronymianum and, later, the Roman Martyrology keep his memory on 10 May, together with the companions named in the legendary acts. Relics attributed to him were translated at various times; some were reported to rest in Santa Maria in Trastevere, a church closely tied to the memory of Callixtus. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the medieval or Tridentine type. His status as a saint rests on the ancient local cultus of a Roman martyr, subsequently ratified by inclusion in the official martyrologies. No medieval or modern tradition assigns him a specific patronage of places, trades, or causes.

Beyond the identification of Calepodius as a priest and martyr of Rome, and beyond the topographic fact of the cemetery that preserved his name, the historical record is silent. Birthplace, family, whether he was married, and the precise circumstances and year of his death all remain unknown. A careful reading of the evidence therefore distinguishes two layers: an early Roman cult centered on a named priest buried on the Via Aurelia, which is historically secure in outline; and a later, novelistic passion that supplied the dramatic death in the Tiber, the date 232, and the crowd of high-ranking companions, which cannot be treated as history.
