Biography

Short Description

Calimerius, known in Italian as San Calimero, was an early bishop of the church of Milan and is venerated as a saint by both the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Virtually no contemporary testimony about him survives. What is known comes from later Milanese tradition, from the Roman Martyrology, and from the Catalogus archiepiscoporum Mediolanensium, an episcopal list compiled in the fifth century. That tradition describes him as a Christian of Greek origin who was educated at Rome and associated with Pope Telesphorus, a second-century pontiff himself remembered as a Greek. From Rome Calimerius was said to have been sent to Milan, where he served as bishop of a still-small Christian community in a major imperial city of northern Italy. His Greek name is consistent with an eastern background, but it does not by itself confirm the legendary link with Telesphorus or prove a precise place of birth, neither of which is documented in any early source.

The same Catalogus assigns him an episcopate lasting from 138 until 191, which would make him a contemporary of the emperors Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, and Commodus and would place his death in the last years of the second century. Historians regard those dates as untrustworthy. They belong to a schematic attempt to push the Milanese see back into the sub-apostolic age and to fill the long interval before the first bishop of Milan who can be documented from independent sources, Mirocles, who attended the Council of Rome in 313 and the Council of Arles in 314. Archaeological indications connected with the church later dedicated to Calimerius, together with the general pattern of the Milanese cult of martyrs, have led many modern scholars to prefer a date in the later third century, in the era of the persecutions associated with Decius, Valerian, or Diocletian. No year of birth is recorded in any ancient source, and no year of death can be regarded as historically verified.

The passion narrative that circulated in Milan states that Calimerius was thrown headfirst into a well and so obtained the crown of martyrdom. The Roman Martyrology, in its entry for 31 July, commemorates him as bishop and martyr of Milan. In the crypt of the church of San Calimero, situated in the southeastern part of the historic city not far from the Roman road that led toward Rome, a well is still shown and identified as the instrument of his death. The church is believed to stand over his burial place; it has been rebuilt on several occasions, including a notable reconstruction in the seventeenth century, but it has preserved the memory of the saint and his relics. Water drawn from the well was long credited with miraculous properties and attracted local devotion.

Beyond Milan, Calimerius remained a comparatively obscure figure, and no medieval pope is recorded as having formally canonized him. His cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type, resting on continuous local veneration rather than on a juridical process. He does not appear among the principal patrons of the Ambrosian church, a rank occupied by Ambrose and, later, Charles Borromeo, together with the martyrs Gervasius and Protasius. Nevertheless the basilica that bears his name kept his memory alive in the liturgy and in popular piety. Because the early succession of the bishops of Milan before the fourth century cannot be reconstructed with confidence, Calimerius stands as a representative of that shadowy foundational period: a figure whose existence as an object of cult is certain, but whose biography, dates, and even the precise circumstances of his death remain beyond the reach of verification.
