Biography

Short Description

Callinicus I (Greek: Kallinikos) was Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople in the late seventh and early eighth centuries, occupying the see from 693 until his deposition in 705. Almost nothing reliable is recorded of his birth, family, or education. The principal Byzantine narrative sources identify him, before his elevation, as a presbyter attached to the Church of the Theotokos at Blachernae, the major Marian shrine in the northern quarter of Constantinople. He succeeded Patriarch Paul III during the first reign of Emperor Justinian II. His patriarchate fell in one of the most unstable stretches of middle Byzantine political history, spanning the end of Justinian’s first reign, the usurpations of Leontios and of Apsimar (Tiberius III), and Justinian’s violent restoration.

The episode most often attached to his name is a clash with imperial authority over a consecrated building. According to the chronicle of Theophanes the Confessor, Justinian II resolved to demolish a church in order to construct an ornamental fountain or related palace amenity. Callinicus refused to bless the destruction of a church. Under pressure he is reported to have used an ambiguous doxology of the type “Glory to God who endures all things, now and forever,” which the court treated as reluctant acquiescence. Later tradition read the incident as patriarchal resistance, however incomplete, to the emperor’s will in a matter of sacred property. The same sources do not preserve a detailed administrative record of his synods, correspondence, or doctrinal activity; the seventh-century Christological aftermath of the Sixth Ecumenical Council and the Quinisext Council of 691–692 formed the wider ecclesiastical background, but Callinicus himself is not the central figure in those debates.

In 695 Justinian II was overthrown, mutilated, and sent into exile. The new emperor, Leontios, received coronation from Callinicus, an act that identified the patriarch with the usurping regime in the eyes of the deposed sovereign. Callinicus remained in office when Leontios was himself deposed in 698 and replaced by Apsimar, who reigned as Tiberius III. He thus served under three successive emperors in little more than a decade, a pattern that illustrates how dependent the Constantinopolitan throne had become on the palace. When Justinian II, supported by the Bulgar ruler Tervel, recovered the capital in 705, he moved against those he regarded as having betrayed him. Callinicus was deposed and blinded, a punishment that also rendered him canonically ineligible for episcopal office, and was sent to Rome.

He died in exile at Rome, according to the usual reconstruction of the chronicles, in 705. No independent contemporary vita survives, and the place of his burial is not securely attested. Later Eastern Orthodox tradition numbered him among the saints and confessors and commemorated him on 23 August, remembering him as a hierarch who suffered under imperial vengeance. The historical dossier remains thin: beyond the notices in Theophanes and related Byzantine chronicles, details of his origins, any possible marriage or monastic profession before the priesthood at Blachernae, and the precise circumstances of his last months in Rome are unknown. He is of interest chiefly as a late seventh-century patriarch whose career shows both the vulnerability of the see of Constantinople to palace revolutions and the later hagiographical habit of honoring bishops who were mutilated or exiled by the emperors of that turbulent age.
