Biography

Short Description

Saint Calupan, also known in Latin sources as Caluppa or Caluppanus, was a sixth-century monk and recluse of the Auvergne in Gaul. Almost everything that can be stated about him with historical caution derives from Gregory of Tours, a contemporary and fellow Auvergnat, who devoted a chapter of his Liber vitae patrum (Life of the Fathers) to the hermit. Gregory presents Calupan as a native of the Auvergne who, while still a young man, entered the monastery of Méallet (Malciacum), in the territory of what is now the French department of Cantal. There he lived under ordinary monastic discipline for a number of years. Seeking a stricter solitude, he obtained leave to withdraw from the community and enclosed himself in a cave set in a steep rocky outcrop near the monastery, above a stream and difficult of access.

Gregory relates that the devil attempted to drive Calupan from this retreat by terrifying apparitions. Two enormous serpents are said to have filled the cave and coiled about the recluse; later a monstrous dragon appeared. Calupan remained at prayer, made the sign of the cross, and was unharmed; the visions departed without being able to force him from his cell. He persevered for many years in fasting, vigils, and prayer. Clergy and laypeople of the region visited him for counsel. Among his visitors was Avitus, bishop of Clermont, the metropolitan see of the Auvergne. Gregory of Tours, who knew Avitus well and wrote while memory of the hermit was still fresh, treated Calupan as an authentic confessor whose hidden life illustrated the power of the cross against demonic assault.

Traditional martyrologies and later hagiographical compilations place Calupan’s death in 576, and his feast came to be observed on 3 March. He belongs to the large class of early medieval saints whose cult arose from local devotion and episcopal recognition rather than from a later papal process of canonization; hence he is classed as a pre-congregation saint. No writings by Calupan survive, and nothing reliable is recorded of his family, the precise place or year of his birth, or the exact spot of his burial, though his hermitage remained associated with Méallet. His memory is that of a monk who passed from cenobitic life to the eremitical state in the forests and rocks of sixth-century Gaul, and whose constancy Gregory of Tours wished to hold up as an example for his own generation.
