Biography

Short Description

Camilla Battista da Varano was born in 1458 in Camerino, in the Marche of central Italy, as a daughter of Giulio Cesare da Varano, lord of that city-state. Her mother was of modest origin and the birth stood outside her father's marriage, yet she was raised at the Varano court and given a humanist education that included Latin. The culture of a Renaissance princely household thus shaped her early years, even as she developed a strong attraction to the Passion of Christ. A sermon on the sufferings of Jesus, heard in her youth, marked her interior life and helped form a vocation that ran against the family's expectation that she would contract a politically useful marriage.

In 1481 she entered the monastery of the Poor Clares at Urbino and received the religious name Battista. When her father founded a house of the same order in Camerino a few years later, she transferred to the new community and in time served as its abbess. Within the cloister she composed a body of spiritual writing that is among the more substantial produced by an Italian woman of the late fifteenth century. The works associated with her include an autobiographical spiritual memoir, often known as The Spiritual Life, and meditations on the interior sufferings of Christ. They combine personal experience, Franciscan devotion to the Passion, and instruction addressed to her sisters, and they place her among the notable mystical voices of Observant Franciscan Italy.

The political catastrophe that overtook the Varano family in 1502 interrupted her monastic life. Cesare Borgia seized Camerino; Giulio Cesare da Varano and several of Battista's brothers were put to death. She was compelled to leave her monastery and spent a period of exile in other houses of her order, including a stay at Atri. After the death of Pope Alexander VI and the collapse of Borgia power in the region, she returned to Camerino, restored community life, and continued as a writer and superior.

She died in Camerino in 1524. A local cult developed around her memory in the Marche. Pope Gregory XVI beatified her in 1843, and Pope Benedict XVI canonized her in 2010. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 31 May. She is remembered as a Poor Clare mystic and spiritual writer, a princess who chose the cloister, and a witness both to the religious currents and to the political violence of Renaissance Italy.
