Biography

Short Description

Camille Costa de Beauregard was a Catholic priest of Savoyard noble birth whose life spanned the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was born in 1841 at La Motte-Servolex, in the Duchy of Savoy, then a territory of the Kingdom of Sardinia. His family, the Costas de Beauregard, belonged to the regional aristocracy associated with Chambéry. In 1860 Savoy was annexed to France, so his adult years and entire priestly ministry unfolded in the French department of Savoie. Later Catholic writing on him stresses the contrast between that aristocratic origin and the modest, practical charity that came to define his priesthood; little of a sensational kind is recorded of his childhood.

He was ordained for the diocese of Chambéry and remained a diocesan priest rather than joining a religious order. Instead of a purely administrative or honorific clerical career, he devoted himself to abandoned and orphaned boys. In Chambéry he founded and long directed an orphanage known as Le Bocage, which became the principal work of his life. The house received destitute children, offering lodging, Christian formation, elementary schooling, and training toward honest trades. Contemporary and later accounts present him as living among the boys, overseeing their upbringing, and seeking support among local benefactors so that the institution could endure. The Bocage became a recognized charitable establishment in the city and the center of his public memory.

Costa de Beauregard’s reputation in Savoie was that of a priest of austerity and constancy rather than of controversy or high ecclesiastical office. Bound by the celibate discipline of the Latin clergy, he did not marry and had no children. He died in 1910 in Chambéry, still associated with the orphanage he had founded. Precise burial details are not among the facts firmly established in widely cited historical summaries.

A cause for his beatification was later introduced in the Catholic Church. After diocesan and Roman procedures, Pope Francis in 2015 authorized a decree on his heroic virtues, and Costa de Beauregard is therefore styled Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized, and he has no universally assigned feast day or official list of patronages. His memory remains chiefly local: a priest of the church of Chambéry, remembered as an example of charity toward orphans rather than as the object of a widespread cult.
