Biography

Short Description

The Canadian Martyrs, also known as the North American Martyrs, were eight French Jesuit missionaries killed between 1642 and 1649 in New France, in what is now southern Ontario and upstate New York. The group comprises six priests of the Society of Jesus—Jean de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, Antoine Daniel, Gabriel Lalemant, Charles Garnier, and Noël Chabanel—and two lay assistants, René Goupil and Jean de Lalande. They worked chiefly among the Wendat (Huron) confederacy from the fortified residence of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, established in 1639 near present-day Midland, Ontario, and also among related peoples such as the Petun (Tobacco Nation). Jogues, Goupil, and Lalande were associated as well with missions and captivity among the Mohawk.

Their deaths occurred during the Beaver Wars, when Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) raids destroyed Wendat villages allied with the French. René Goupil was killed at Ossernenon (near modern Auriesville, New York) in 1642 after capture with Jogues. Jogues, who had earlier suffered captivity and the mutilation of his hands, returned to Mohawk country as an envoy and was killed there in 1646; Jean de Lalande died the following day. Antoine Daniel was slain in 1648 while ministering during an attack on the Wendat village of Teanaostaye. In March 1649 Jean de Brébeuf and Gabriel Lalemant were seized at Saint-Louis and tortured to death at Saint-Ignace. Charles Garnier was killed in December 1649 during an assault on the Petun mission of Saint-Jean, and Noël Chabanel was murdered the same day while withdrawing from the ruined missions.

From Sainte-Marie the Jesuits combined evangelization with linguistic and ethnographic work. Brébeuf was especially noted for his command of the Wendat language, for grammatical and lexical materials, and for a Christmas hymn in Wendat later known as the Huron Carol. Letters and journals from the mission, published in France as the Jesuit Relations, remain principal sources for the history of the period. The missionaries faced recurrent epidemics that devastated Indigenous communities, food shortages, and the collapse of Wendat military and political power. After the destruction of Huronia in 1649–1650, surviving Jesuits withdrew with Wendat refugees toward Quebec, and they burned Sainte-Marie themselves to keep it from enemy use.

Public cult of the eight developed in Canada and later in the United States. Pope Pius XI beatified them on 21 June 1925 and canonized them on 29 June 1930. They are secondary patrons of Canada. Their feast is observed on 26 September in Canada and on 19 October in the United States and in the General Roman Calendar. Principal pilgrimage sites are the Martyrs’ Shrine at Midland, Ontario, beside the reconstructed Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, and the National Shrine of the North American Martyrs at Auriesville, New York, near the traditional site of Ossernenon. Relics of Brébeuf and Lalemant, recovered after their deaths, are kept at the Midland shrine.
