Biography

Saint Cándida María de Jesús was born Juana Josefa Cipitria y Barriola on 31 May 1845 in Andoain, a town in the Basque province of Gipuzkoa in northern Spain. She was the eldest child of Juan Miguel Cipitria and María Jesús Barriola. The family lived in poverty and moved frequently in search of work. From childhood Juana Josefa helped support her parents and siblings by taking employment as a domestic servant. She received only rudimentary schooling, yet she cultivated a rich life of prayer, frequent reception of the sacraments, and a particular love for the Eucharist and for the Blessed Virgin Mary.

While working in Salamanca she met the Jesuit priest Father Miguel José Herranz, who became her spiritual director. Under his guidance she was introduced to the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and discerned a call to found a religious congregation whose members would dedicate themselves to the Christian education of children and young people, especially girls of modest means. On 8 December 1871, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, she and five companions began community life in a rented house in Salamanca. She took the religious name Cándida María de Jesús, and the new institute was called the Congregation of the Daughters of Jesus (Hijas de Jesús). The first years were extremely difficult: the sisters lived in great poverty, faced local misunderstanding, and struggled to obtain the necessary permissions and resources to open schools.

Mother Cándida governed the congregation with a blend of practical wisdom, maternal solicitude, and deep contemplative prayer. She insisted that the sisters receive a thorough Ignatian formation and that their educational work form both the intellect and the heart of their pupils. Despite chronic ill health and numerous obstacles, she oversaw the opening of houses and schools in several Spanish dioceses. She remained personally simple, often performing the humblest tasks, and was known for her unshakeable trust in Divine Providence and her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to Mary Immaculate.

Cándida María de Jesús died in Salamanca on 9 August 1912. The congregation she founded continued to grow after her death, establishing educational works in Latin America and other regions while remaining dedicated to education in the Ignatian spirit. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 12 May 1996 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on 17 October 2010 during a ceremony in Saint Peter's Square. Her feast is celebrated on 9 August. She is venerated as a model of humble service, educational apostolate, and fidelity to a founding charism lived in poverty and trust.
