Biography

Short Description

Caprasius of Agen, known in French as Saint Caprais, is venerated as a Christian martyr associated with the city of Agen in Aquitaine, in what is now southwestern France. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary historical documents. The surviving accounts belong to later hagiography rather than to fourth-century records. Tradition places his death in the early fourth century, during the Great Persecution begun under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian. In Gaul the application of the anti-Christian edicts was uneven, but local legend links Agen, then an important town in the province of Aquitania, with several martyrs of this period. Caprasius is said to have withdrawn from the city and taken refuge in a cave or on a nearby height in order to escape arrest.

The principal legend of his martyrdom is bound up with that of Saint Faith (Fides, Sainte Foy), a young Christian of Agen. According to the traditional narrative, Faith was arrested, refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods, and was subjected to torture, including burning on a metal bed or gridiron, before being beheaded. Caprasius, still in hiding, either witnessed her passion or received a heavenly sign such as a vision of a crown. He then left his refuge, presented himself to the authorities, confessed the Christian faith, and was likewise condemned and executed by beheading. Later versions of the story add further companions, including Alberta, sometimes described as Faith’s sister, and two brothers named Primus and Felician. These additional names are widely regarded as later conflations of originally separate cults rather than as historically secure details.

Whether Caprasius ever held the office of bishop of Agen is uncertain. Medieval tradition and the dedication of Agen’s cathedral to him led many sources to style him bishop, yet early evidence for an episcopal career is lacking, and modern historians generally treat the title as legendary. A church in his honor existed in Agen from an early medieval date and in time became the Cathedral of Saint-Caprais. Relics associated with him were venerated there. His feast is kept on 20 October. He is honored as a patron of the city of Agen. The more widely diffused cult of Saint Faith, whose relics were translated in the ninth century to the abbey of Conques, largely overshadowed Caprasius outside the immediate region of Agen.

Caprasius of Agen must be distinguished from Saint Caprasius of Lérins, a fifth-century monk and companion of Saint Honoratus who lived as a hermit on the island of Lérins and is a separate figure with a different feast. Because the Passio of the Agen martyr is late and legendary, many biographical particulars remain unverifiable. He belongs to the large number of local martyrs of Roman Gaul whose historical outlines have been largely replaced by pious legend, yet whose cults helped shape the religious identity of their cities for centuries.
