Biography

Short Description

Saint Caprasius, known in French as Saint Caprais, is a Christian martyr venerated especially at Agen in Aquitaine, in what is now southwestern France. Hagiographical tradition places his death in the context of the Roman persecutions of Christians in Gaul, most often during the early fourth century under the emperor Diocletian or his colleagues. He is closely associated in legend and liturgy with Saint Faith (Sainte Foy) of Agen, a young woman whose martyrdom became the subject of a widely circulated passio and whose relics later drew pilgrims to Conques. No contemporary record of Caprasius survives, and even the traditional year of death commonly given in later sources cannot be treated as historically verified.

According to the legendary narrative preserved in the passio of Saint Faith, Caprasius had taken refuge in a remote place—sometimes specified as a cave in the hills near Agen—while persecution was at its height. When Faith was arrested, tortured, and put to death for refusing to sacrifice to the pagan gods, Caprasius witnessed her constancy. Moved by her example, he emerged from hiding, presented himself to the magistrate (often named Dacian in the texts), and openly professed the Christian faith. He was then condemned and executed, traditionally by beheading. Later recensions of the story add further companions, including saints named Alberta, Primus, and Felician. Some medieval writers and local traditions identified Caprasius as a bishop of Agen, but this episcopal title is not found in the earliest layers of the tradition and is generally regarded as a later legendary accretion rather than a documented office.

The historical facts underlying the legend cannot be established with precision. The passio of Saint Faith, which is the principal narrative source, is a literary composition of uncertain date, probably not earlier than the fifth or sixth century. The cult of the Agen martyrs, however, is ancient. A church dedicated to Caprasius existed at Agen from an early period; the present Cathedral of Saint-Caprais, a distinguished Romanesque structure with later Gothic additions, stands on that dedication and has long been regarded as the resting place of his relics. His feast is observed on 20 October. In the Roman Martyrology and in many medieval calendars he is commemorated on that date, sometimes in conjunction with Saint Faith.

Devotion to Caprasius remained primarily local, centered on Agen and its cathedral, although the great medieval popularity of Sainte Foy ensured that his name appeared in martyrologies and liturgical books across western Europe. He is regarded as a patron of the city and diocese of Agen. Little or nothing can be verified concerning his birth, family, or early life. He should not be confused with Saint Caprasius of Lérins, a fifth-century hermit and monastic elder who lived on the island of Lérins off the Provençal coast and who is associated with Saint Honoratus of Arles.
