Biography

Short Description

Carileph of Anille, known in Latin as Carilephus or Carilefus and in French as Saint Calais (also Carilef), was a monk, hermit, and abbot of the sixth century whose memory is attached to the monastery of Anille in Maine, in the western Frankish kingdom. The modern town of Saint-Calais in the department of Sarthe grew around that house and still bears his name. No contemporary charter or chronicle records his birth, parentage, or early career. What is known of him depends on later hagiography, especially a Vita Sancti Carileffi written well after the Merovingian period, and on the liturgical commemoration of an abbot-founder at Anille. Medieval tradition states that he came from Auvergne.

According to that tradition, Carileph took the monastic habit at Menat in Auvergne and lived under the influence of Saint Avitus, a figure associated with the monastic movement of the Loire and of Micy. Desiring a more hidden life, he left his first community and travelled north into the forests of Maine, in the diocese of Le Mans. He established himself as a hermit in woodland along the river Anille, living in poverty on wild plants. The vita recounts that Childebert I, king of Paris and son of Clovis, came upon the hermit while hunting on royal land. Impressed by Carileph’s austerity, the king granted him the forest of Anille so that an oratory and monastic cells might be built. Carileph is presented as the first abbot of the resulting monastery and as a priest, though the name of the bishop who ordained him is not securely established.

The historical kernel is plausible: a sixth-century eremitical foundation on royal land in Maine, later regularized as a monastery, fits the pattern of Merovingian monastic expansion. The house of Anille became, in subsequent centuries, a Benedictine abbey of regional importance, endowed by Frankish kings and at times in dispute with the bishops of Le Mans. Those later institutional fortunes explain why the founder’s cult was maintained, but they do not add reliable biographical detail. Dates of birth are unknown. His death is placed by tradition on 1 July in the middle of the sixth century; older modern compilers often gave the year as approximately 536, while other notices give 541. Neither year rests on a contemporary record.

Carileph was buried at his monastery. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 1 July as a confessor and abbot at Anille in the diocese of Le Mans. Some calendars also note a translation of relics later in the year. He belongs to the large class of early medieval saints whose honours grew from local monastic veneration rather than from a papal process of canonization or beatification. No authentic list of widespread patronages survives beyond his identification with Saint-Calais itself. The abbey suffered in later wars, and the history of the relics is fragmentary. For the historian, Carileph remains an obscure Merovingian monastic founder: the names, the place, the royal grant, and the feast day are the stable elements; the rest is pious narrative of uncertain date.
