Biography

Short Description

Carina of Ancyra (also rendered Karina, Karine, or Cassina in various Latin and Greek sources) is a Christian martyr commemorated in both Western and Eastern calendars as the wife of Melasippus and the mother of Antoninus. The tradition places her in Ancyra in Galatia, in central Anatolia, during the brief reign of the emperor Julian (361–363), whose attempt to restore traditional Roman religion produced a limited but well-remembered round of local persecutions. Almost nothing independent of the martyrological notices survives: no contemporary inscription, no securely dated passio of early date, and no verified year of birth. She is known solely as a member of this family group of Ancyran martyrs.

The Roman Martyrology records, under 7 November, the passion at Ancyra of Melasippus, Carina his wife, and their son Antoninus, under the emperor Julian. Greek synaxaria of the same date give the names as Melasippos, Karine, and Antoninos, and some recensions add a group of forty children said to have been instructed by Melasippus and killed with the family. Later hagiographical elaborations describe Melasippus as a learned Christian teacher whose household converted pagans in the city; they then narrate arrest by the provincial authorities, public interrogation, and a sequence of tortures inflicted on the parents while the boy was compelled to watch, ending in the death of all three. These narrative details belong to the conventional language of later martyr acts and cannot be verified as historical reportage.

What can be stated with more confidence is the shape of the cult. The entry in the Roman Martyrology and the corresponding notice in the Byzantine menologion show that by the medieval period the three names were already fixed as a single liturgical unit attached to Ancyra and to Julian’s reign. Carina is therefore remembered not as a monastic or clerical figure but as a married laywoman and mother who died for the Christian faith together with her husband and child. No religious order is associated with her, no papal or patriarchal office, and no medieval bull of canonization or beatification; like most pre-Constantinian and fourth-century martyrs she entered the calendar by popular and liturgical veneration rather than by a formal process.

The precise place of burial is unknown, and no ancient shrine at Ankara can be tied to her by contemporary evidence. Modern lists of patronage do not assign her a distinctive cause, profession, or place beyond the general honour given to early martyrs. Historians treat the family as an example of the Julianic martyr traditions of Galatia: the names and the feast day are stable in the liturgical sources, while the biographical colouring remains the work of later hagiographers. Carina thus stands as an obscure but consistently attested fourth-century Ancyran martyr, known through the calendar rather than through a recoverable life.
