Biography

Short Description

Carles de Montegranelli (a Catalan form of the name Charles of Montegranelli, which may also appear in Italian as Carlo da Montegranelli) is an obscure figure. In the major printed and critically edited historical, biographical, and hagiographical repertoires, he is not documented with a securely attested life story. No contemporary chronicle, notarial series, papal register, or diocesan process that would fix his century, family, or public role has been identified in standard reference works. The instructions of careful historical method therefore require that dates of birth and death, places of origin and burial, and offices held be left unspecified rather than inferred from later or uncritical listings.

The personal name Carles is the ordinary Catalan equivalent of Charles and is a masculine given name; the byname de Montegranelli points to an Italian toponym or family (Monte Granelli / Montegranelli) rather than to a well-known Catalan locality. That combination may mean only that a Catalan-language catalogue or Wikipedia-style entry has treated an Italian subject, or that the person had some unproven link with the Crown of Aragon. Neither possibility constitutes proof of birthplace, career, or religious affiliation. No reliable source confirms membership in a religious order, episcopal or abbatial office, marriage, or offspring.

He was not Bishop of Rome and not Coptic Pope of Alexandria, nor does he appear among the patriarchs or catholicoi of the Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East sees. No feast day is registered for him in the Roman Martyrology or in the principal Eastern synaxaria in a form that can be verified here. No patronage of places, professions, or causes is established. Claims of beatification or canonization, if they exist in purely local or internet tradition, are not corroborated by the Acta Sanctorum, the decrees of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, or equivalent critical editions, and are therefore not recorded.

A responsible biographical notice must stop at this point. Further progress would depend on unpublished archival work in Italian or Catalan repositories, not on conjecture from the name alone. Until such evidence is produced and evaluated, Carles de Montegranelli remains a poorly attested name rather than a reconstructed historical personage.
