Biography

Short Description

Carlo Gnocchi was born on 25 October 1902 in San Colombano al Lambro, in the province of Milan in northern Italy, to Enrico Gnocchi and Clementina Pasta. His father died while Carlo was still a child, after which the family moved to Milan. He entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Milan and was ordained a priest in 1925. In the following years he worked as a teacher and spiritual guide to young people, notably at the Istituto Gonzaga in Milan, and was active as a chaplain and educator in Catholic Action. He became known for a pastoral style that joined intellectual formation with close personal care for students.

When Italy entered the Second World War, Gnocchi volunteered as a military chaplain with the Alpini, the Italian mountain infantry. He served on the Greco-Albanian front and later accompanied Alpine units to the Eastern Front in the Soviet Union in 1942. He shared the hardships of the disastrous winter retreat of 1942–1943, remaining with the troops to assist the wounded and to minister to the dying. The suffering he witnessed, especially among the young, determined the rest of his life. After returning to Italy he began to gather war orphans and children mutilated by combat, frostbite, mines, and bombardment.

From that work grew the Fondazione Pro Infanzia Mutilata, later known as the Fondazione Pro Juventute and today as the Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi. The foundation established rehabilitation centres in Italy that provided orthopedic care, prostheses, schooling, and vocational training so that disabled children might be reintegrated into society. Gnocchi’s concern later extended to children affected by poliomyelitis and other disabilities. He sought not only medical assistance but also the dignity and education of those in his care, and he became a prominent advocate for the disabled in postwar Italy.

In his last years he developed a malignant tumour, which he accepted as a share in the suffering of the people he served. He died in Milan on 28 February 1956. Before his death he arranged for the donation of his corneas, which were transplanted to two young blind patients, an act that drew wide public attention in Italy at a time when such donations were still uncommon. The Archdiocese of Milan promoted his cause; he was declared Venerable after a recognition of heroic virtue, and he was beatified in Milan on 25 October 2009 under Pope Benedict XVI. He is remembered as a priest of the Ambrosian tradition whose wartime chaplaincy and pioneering work for disabled children made him a significant figure of twentieth-century Italian Catholicism.
