Biography
Carlos Díaz Gandía was born on 25 December 1907 in Ontinyent (also known as Onteniente), a town in the province of Valencia in eastern Spain. The town, in the Vall d’Albaida, had a substantial textile industry in which many local families found work. He grew up in the Catholic milieu typical of much of small-town Valencia in the early twentieth century. As a young adult he was employed in a textile factory. He received a Christian formation and took part in the organized apostolate of the laity rather than entering a religious order or the priesthood.
He became a member of Catholic Action (Acción Católica), the association of the Catholic laity promoted in that period for the Christian formation of society and the public defense of the Church. In parish life and in Catholic Action he was known as an active and committed layman of the Archdiocese of Valencia. He married and lived as a Christian husband. His adult years coincided with the Second Spanish Republic, from 1931, a time of anticlerical legislation, assaults on churches, and deepening political conflict that would break into civil war.
When the Spanish Civil War began in July 1936, much of the province of Valencia remained under Republican control. In the following months a violent persecution of the Catholic Church unfolded there: churches and convents were sacked or closed, public worship was suppressed, and large numbers of priests, religious, and lay Catholics were killed. Lay members of Catholic Action were frequently targeted because they were visible representatives of the Church in workplaces and neighborhoods. Díaz Gandía did not abandon his faith or his association with Catholic life.
In August 1936 he was arrested in Ontinyent because of his Catholic identity and activity. On 11 August 1936 he was taken out and shot. He was twenty-eight years old and died in his native town. The Catholic Church later judged his death a martyrdom in odium fidei, that is, out of hatred for the faith, within the systematic religious persecution of 1936 in that region.
Pope John Paul II beatified him in Saint Peter’s Square on 11 March 2001, together with 232 other martyrs of 1936–1937 associated with the Archdiocese of Valencia, a group commonly counted as the 233 Spanish martyrs of that ceremony. He is venerated as Blessed Carlos Díaz Gandía. His memorial is associated with the date of his death, 11 August. He has not been canonized. The name of his spouse, whether he had children, and his precise burial place are not firmly established in the widely available hagiographical notices.
