Biography

Short Description

Cartholinus is an extremely obscure name in the Christian hagiographical record. No contemporary chronicle, episcopal list, monastic necrology, or early martyrology that can be independently verified attaches a life, a place, or a date to this figure. The Latin form of the name indicates a male subject of the medieval Latin West, yet neither the century in which he lived nor the region associated with any cult can be established from sources that meet ordinary historical standards. Unlike saints whose existence is corroborated by multiple independent witnesses, Cartholinus survives, if at all, only as an isolated onomastic entry.

Later compilations of saints sometimes reproduce names that originated in copyists’ errors, local calendars that never generated a written vita, or conflations with better-attested holy persons. In the absence of a surviving passio, vita, or even a consistent feast in the principal recensions of the Martyrologium Hieronymianum or the medieval Roman Martyrology, nothing reliable can be said about family origin, ecclesiastical office, manner of death, or place of burial. No religious order can be documented as his, and no evidence exists that he held the see of Rome or any patriarchal throne of the Eastern churches.

Critical hagiography, following the methods developed by the Bollandists, therefore leaves the dossier empty. Claims of a specific feast day, patronage, or miraculous cult cannot be traced to primary liturgical books or pilgrimage records and must be treated as unverified. The most accurate historical statement is that Cartholinus remains a name without a recoverable biography: a reminder of how many figures once regarded as saints in some local tradition have left no trace that modern scholarship can authenticate.
