Biography

Short Description

Saint Casilda of Toledo (Spanish: Santa Casilda de Toledo) is known almost entirely through medieval legend and later Castilian hagiography rather than through contemporary documents. Tradition presents her as a daughter of a Muslim ruler of Toledo in al-Andalus, often identified in later retellings with a taifa king such as al-Ma'mun, and therefore as a princess raised in Islam in the eleventh century. Precise years of birth and death were never recorded in a verifiable way; later writers offered round eleventh-century dates and even a lifespan of a hundred years, but these remain pious convention. What the legend consistently affirms is her origin in Toledo, her compassion for Christian captives held in her father's prisons, and her eventual flight into Christian Castile.

The central episode of her early life is an act of mercy that became a miracle story. Casilda is said to have carried bread and other food in secret to the Christian prisoners. Intercepted and asked what she concealed, she answered that she was carrying roses; when her burden was uncovered, the bread had been changed into roses. The same rose-miracle motif appears in the legends of Elizabeth of Hungary and Elizabeth of Portugal, and it cannot be treated as a datable historical event, but it became the emblem by which Casilda was remembered. She herself later suffered a chronic illness, usually described as a hemorrhage or issue of blood that physicians in Toledo could not cure. Christian captives, according to the story, told her of healing waters at a spring or lagoon of San Vicente in the district of La Bureba, in the Christian kingdom of Castile, near what is now Briviesca in the province of Burgos.

With permission to seek a cure she traveled north, was healed at the waters, received baptism, and refused to return to Toledo or to Islam. She then settled as a hermit beside the same springs, living in prayer and austerity for many years until her death at an advanced age. A sanctuary, the Santuario de Santa Casilda, grew up at the site of her hermitage and the lagoon, in the countryside associated with the village of Buezo near Briviesca; her relics have been venerated there, and the place became a pilgrimage shrine, especially for those seeking relief from bleeding disorders and for women hoping for children. Her cult took root in medieval Castile and remains strongest in Burgos, though she is also commemorated in Toledo.

Casilda was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or Tridentine type; her sainthood rests on long-standing popular and liturgical veneration. The Roman Martyrology and local calendars keep her feast on 9 April. In popular devotion she is invoked against hemorrhages and other blood ailments and as a helper of the infertile, associations that flow directly from the legend of her own illness and of the waters of San Vicente. Because the written tradition is late and legendary, a careful account must distinguish the enduring outline of the story—Toledan Muslim origin, mercy to captives, conversion in Castile, eremitical death near Briviesca—from the unverifiable dates and courtly details that later authors supplied.
