Biography

Short Description

Saint Cassian of Imola, known in Latin as Cassianus, was a Christian schoolmaster and martyr of northern Italy whose memory is preserved chiefly through a late fourth-century poem. The Spanish Christian poet Prudentius, writing in the Peristephanon after a visit to Forum Cornelii (the present Imola in Emilia-Romagna), describes seeing a painting of the saint's passion and hearing the local story from a custodian of the shrine. No ancient source records Cassian's birthplace, parentage, or year of birth, and nothing reliable is known of his life before the events of his martyrdom.

According to the tradition Prudentius recorded, Cassian taught boys at Imola, training them to write with the metal stylus on wax tablets. During a persecution of Christians he was arrested. Because he would not offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, the magistrate consigned him to his own pupils to be put to death. The boys stabbed him repeatedly with their styli. Prudentius dwells on the protracted nature of the killing: death came through many small wounds rather than a single stroke, and some of the students are said to have acted with the resentment of pupils toward a strict master. The poem does not name the reigning emperor. Later hagiographers have placed the martyrdom either in the Diocletianic persecution at the beginning of the fourth century or under Julian in the mid-fourth century; neither dating can be confirmed from contemporary documents.

Cassian's relics and cult remained centered on Imola. A church in his honor stood there by late antiquity, and the cathedral of Imola, dedicated to San Cassiano, has long claimed his remains and honors him as the city's principal patron. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 13 August and retells the Prudentian narrative. Because he was a teacher slain with writing instruments, he has been invoked as patron of schoolteachers, of stenographers and shorthand writers, and of parish clerks. Several Italian places named San Casciano also reflect his cult.

Apart from Prudentius and the martyrological notices that depend on him, Cassian is historically obscure. There is no verified evidence that he held ecclesiastical office, belonged to a religious order, or had a family. His significance for later centuries lies in the early literary attestation of an Emilian martyr cult and in the distinctive iconography of a master killed by his students' pens, a scene occasionally represented in medieval and later art.
