Biography

Short Description

Catalina de Balmaseda y San Martín, known in religion as Catalina de Cristo, was a Castilian Discalced Carmelite nun of the sixteenth century and a collaborator of Saint Teresa of Ávila in the establishment of reformed Carmelite monasteries for women. She was born on 28 October 1544 in Madrigal de las Altas Torres, in the province of Ávila in the Crown of Castile, into a family of the local nobility recorded under the surnames Balmaseda and San Martín. She did not enter the cloister as a child. Like a number of other early Teresian nuns of similar standing, she came to religious life as an adult after years spent in secular society in Castile, and she remained unmarried.

The Discalced Carmelite reform, begun by Teresa of Jesus at San José de Ávila in 1562, sought a stricter observance of poverty, enclosure, and contemplative prayer than the mitigated Carmelite rule then common in many houses. Catalina entered this reformed Carmel at the monastery of San José in Medina del Campo, a foundation Teresa had made in 1567. She received the habit and made profession in the early 1570s under the name Catalina de Cristo. Teresa, who was then founding new houses and defending the reform, came to rely on a small group of capable nuns as prioresses and foundresses. Catalina belonged to that group. Carmelite testimony presents her as prudent, faithful to the Teresian constitutions, and suited to the government of a community.

In 1581 Teresa founded a Discalced Carmelite convent in Soria, in Old Castile, and Catalina de Cristo was named its first prioress. Teresa traveled to Soria for the foundation and left the new community under Catalina’s direction, a mark of confidence attested in the record of the Teresian foundations. Teresa died at Alba de Tormes in October 1582. In the following years the female Discalced Carmel continued to expand, not without conflict over constitutions and jurisdiction among the reform’s leaders. Catalina remained in the work of foundation. In 1588 she established, as foundress and prioress, the Discalced Carmelite monastery of San José in Barcelona, extending the Teresian Carmel into Catalonia. She governed that community in her last years according to the Teresian constitutions.

She died in Barcelona on 3 January 1594, at about forty-nine years of age. She was never beatified or canonized by the Catholic Church, and she is not assigned a feast in the General Roman Calendar or an official list of patronages. Knowledge of her life depends on Carmelite chronicles, the documentary record of the Soria and Barcelona foundations, and later biographical dictionaries of the Discalced Carmelites and of the Real Academia de la Historia. Compared with better-known Teresian disciples such as Ana de Jesús or María de San José, the surviving documentation on Catalina de Balmaseda is relatively limited, but her role as foundress and prioress of Soria and Barcelona is historically secure.
