Biography

Short Description

Catalina Maura i Pou is not a figure for whom a securely documented biography can be assembled from widely available, reliable historical or hagiographical sources. The name itself is Catalan in structure: Catalina is the Catalan and Spanish form of Catherine, and the pairing Maura i Pou follows the traditional Catalan and Balearic double-surname custom. Both Maura and Pou are surnames with a well-attested presence in Mallorca and, more broadly, in the Catalan-speaking lands of Spain. That onomastic pattern is consistent with a woman from the Balearic Islands or Catalonia, but it does not by itself establish a birthplace, family, or date.

No year of birth or death, no city of birth or death, and no burial site can be confirmed from standard reference works, martyrologies, or major biographical dictionaries. She does not appear among the saints and blesseds of the General Roman Calendar, nor in the better-known regional calendars of Mallorca or Catalonia in a way that would allow a feast day, patronage, or act of beatification or canonization to be stated. There is likewise no verified record that she held any patriarchal or papal office; given her gender, those offices are in any case inapplicable in the Latin, Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, and Church of the East traditions contemplated by the schema.

Whether she lived as a married woman, as a mother, or in a vowed religious state cannot be determined from the sources that can be checked here. The surnames Maura and Pou occur among both lay and religious families in the islands; without congregational necrologies, diocesan archives, or a published vita, it would be improper to assign her to a religious order or to declare her married or celibate. Claims of a specific congregation, a founding role, or a local cult would require primary documentation that is not present in the accessible historical record used for this notice.

In short, Catalina Maura i Pou remains, on present evidence, an obscure person whose life has not entered the mainstream of published Catholic hagiography or secular biography. A fuller account would depend on unpublished or highly local materials—parish registers, convent chronicles, or family papers from Mallorca or Catalonia—that have not been corroborated in the sources available for verification. Until such evidence is produced and checked, dates, places, family status, and any religious title must be left blank rather than conjectured.
