Biography

Short Description

Catalina Thomás (Catalan: Caterina Tomàs i Gallard), known in English as Catherine of Palma, was born on 1 May 1531 in Valldemossa, a mountain village on the island of Mallorca, then under the Crown of Aragon. She came from a poor farming family and was left an orphan in childhood. Relatives took her in, and she spent her youth as a shepherdess in the hills around Valldemossa and later as a domestic servant in Palma. The principal sources for these years are later hagiographical accounts, which describe her as devout from an early age, given to prayer while at work, and as reporting visions of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and angels. The same tradition holds that she was sometimes mocked for her piety and treated harshly in service.

Wishing to enter religion, she applied to convents in Palma but was refused, chiefly because she was poor and could not provide a dowry. She was at last received by the Canonesses Regular of St. Augustine at the convent of Saint Mary Magdalene (Santa Magdalena) in Palma, which she entered in the early 1550s, around the age of twenty-one. She took the habit and made her profession in that enclosed community, which followed the Augustinian rule. She remained there for the rest of her life, more than two decades, occupying ordinary convent offices rather than any role as foundress or reformer.

Within the cloister she acquired a reputation for humility, obedience, and mystical experience. Members of her community and other witnesses attributed to her prolonged prayer, ecstasies, levitations, and instances of supernatural knowledge. These claims belong to the dossier later used in the processes for beatification and canonization; they should be read as the tradition that formed around her, not as independently documented events. She did not leave Mallorca and is not known to have written a spiritual treatise. Her fame on the island was that of a hidden mystic and a model of conventual life.

She died in the convent at Palma on 5 April 1574 and was buried in the monastery church. Popular veneration began soon afterward. Her remains were treated as relics, and tradition reports that her body was found incorrupt; they are still kept at Santa Magdalena. A house in Valldemossa associated with her childhood became a place of pilgrimage. Formal recognition by Rome came much later: Pope Pius VI beatified her in 1792, and Pope Pius XI canonized her in 1930. She is the patron saint of Mallorca. Her liturgical feast is 5 April, the day of her death; on the island she is also commemorated with religious and civic festivities in late July. Churches, chapels, and monuments on Mallorca are dedicated to her, and she remains among the most widely venerated saints of the Balearic Islands.
