Biography

Short Description

Caterina Cittadini was born on 28 September 1801 in Bergamo, in the Lombard region of northern Italy, the daughter of Giovanni Battista Cittadini and Margherita Lanzani. Her childhood was marked by the collapse of her family. Her mother died in 1808, after which her father abandoned Caterina and her younger sister Giuditta. The two girls were received into the orphanage attached to the Benedictine convent of Santa Grata in Bergamo, where Caterina received a careful religious and literary education and absorbed a regular life of prayer and work. The experience of growing up as an orphan in a convent school shaped both her piety and her later conviction that neglected girls needed stable instruction and care.

In the 1820s Caterina left the orphanage and, together with Giuditta, began to teach. After work in Bergamo the sisters settled in 1826 in Somasca, a hillside village near the Adda long associated with Saint Jerome Emiliani and the Somascan Clerics Regular. There they opened a school for girls at a time when elementary education for females, especially among the rural poor of Austrian-ruled Lombardy, remained scarce. The school combined literacy and practical skills with Christian doctrine. Caterina proved an able organizer and a patient teacher, and the house became a local centre of education for girls of modest means.

Giuditta Cittadini died in 1844, leaving Caterina solely responsible for the school. She drew other women into the work and gradually gave the group a religious character. Inspired by the example of Saint Angela Merici, she placed the community under the protection of Saint Ursula and directed it toward the education of girls, with particular attention to those who were poor or without family. Bishops of Bergamo encouraged the project. Over the following years the companions adopted a common life of prayer and teaching, forming the nucleus of the Ursuline Sisters of Somasca. Caterina lived in simplicity, relying on Providence and treating teaching as a work of charity rather than mere employment.

Caterina Cittadini died in Somasca on 5 May 1857. The institute she had shaped continued after her death, spread in Italy and later abroad, and received fuller canonical recognition in subsequent decades. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 29 April 2001 in Saint Peter's Square. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 5 May. She is remembered in the Diocese of Bergamo and in her congregation as a nineteenth-century Lombard educator who turned the experience of orphanhood into a lasting religious work for the schooling of girls.
