Biography

Short Description

Caterina de Cardona, commonly known in Spanish sources as Catalina de Cardona, was a sixteenth-century noblewoman and hermit of the Catalan House of Cardona. She was born in Naples, capital of the Spanish viceroyalty of the Kingdom of Naples. Reliable biographical tradition identifies her as a daughter of Ramón Folch de Cardona, Duke of Soma and Viceroy of Naples, a leading commander and administrator of the Crown of Aragon. She grew up in the aristocratic world of Naples and later lived at the royal court in Spain, in the orbit of King Philip II. Contemporary testimony, above all that of Saint Teresa of Ávila, stresses her illustrious blood and her years in the palace before she abandoned that life.

In the middle decades of the sixteenth century she left the court, gave up the standing and prospects of her rank, and withdrew to a life of extreme austerity in rural Castile. She settled as a hermit in a cave or simple cell in the countryside of La Mancha, in the district of La Roda in what is now the province of Albacete. There she lived for many years on herbs and spare food, occupied in prayer, penance, and manual work. Witnesses reported that she sometimes wore coarse male clothing in order to guard her solitude. She became known locally for holiness and for spiritual counsel given to those who sought her in the wilderness.

Her eremitical settlement attracted the reforming Carmelites associated with Teresa of Ávila and John of the Cross. Discalced Carmelite friars were established near her hermitage, a church was built, and Catalina received the Carmelite habit, remaining a hermit under the protection of the order rather than a nun in a convent of women. Teresa, who never met her, devoted a substantial chapter of the Book of the Foundations to her example, describing her flight from the palace, her life in the desert, her courage, and the reputation that surrounded her. Teresa treated her as a genuine contemplative vocation lived outside ordinary monastic enclosure, and Carmelite chronicles thereafter preserved her memory among the early associates of the Teresian reform.

She died at her hermitage in 1577. She was not formally beatified or canonized, and she has no feast in the general calendar of the Catholic Church. What is known of her rests chiefly on Teresa’s account, on Carmelite historiography, and on the local memory of the hermitage in the La Roda–Villanueva de la Jara district. That record presents a life that moved from the highest levels of sixteenth-century Neapolitan and Spanish society into radical poverty and contemplative solitude in rural Castile.
