Biography

Short Description

Detailed Narrative

Catharine Chŏng Ch'ŏr-yŏm (Korean: Chŏng Ch'ŏr-yŏm; baptismal name Catharine, also rendered Catherine or Katarina) was a Korean Catholic laywoman of the nineteenth century, venerated as a saint and martyr of the Catholic Church. She is numbered among the 103 Korean Martyrs canonized together in 1984. She lived under the Joseon dynasty, when Catholicism was treated as a criminal heterodoxy. The faith had taken root in Korea in a distinctive way in the late eighteenth century, through Korean scholars who encountered Catholic books in China and through Koreans baptized in Beijing, producing a largely lay-led clandestine community long before foreign clergy could reside there permanently.

Joseon authorities, committed to Neo-Confucian orthodoxy, saw Catholic refusal of ancestral rites and the religion’s foreign connections as threats to social hierarchy and royal authority. Repeated persecutions followed, notably in 1801, 1839 (the Gihae persecution), 1846, and 1866. Thousands of Korean Catholics were arrested, interrogated, tortured in an effort to force apostasy, and executed, most often by beheading. Catharine belonged to this persecuted community. Widely available historical sources preserve far less individual detail about her family, exact birthplace, marital status, or the precise day and place of her death than they do for better-known figures such as Andrew Kim Taegon or Paul Chong Hasang. What the Church’s tradition affirms is that she remained steadfast under trial and accepted death rather than renounce Christ.

The causes of the Korean martyrs were advanced in the twentieth century in two principal groups, corresponding largely to the persecutions of 1839 and of 1846–1866. All 103 were canonized by Pope John Paul II on 6 May 1984 during an outdoor Mass at Yeouido in Seoul, an event of major importance for the Church in Korea. Their collective liturgical commemoration is 20 September. Catharine Chŏng Ch'ŏr-yŏm is thus honored among the Korean witnesses who died for the faith in the nineteenth century; her memory is kept in the liturgy and in the devotion of Korean Catholics, even where the surviving documentary record of her personal life remains sparse.
