Biography

Short Description

Catherine of Bologna, born Caterina de' Vigri in 1413 in Bologna, belonged to a family of the Bolognese professional class. Her father, Giovanni de' Vigri, served as a diplomat and legal counselor associated with the Este court of Ferrara, and her mother was Benvenuta Mammolini. As a child she was placed at the court of Marquis Niccolò III d'Este in Ferrara, where she was educated alongside the princess Margherita d'Este. At court she received instruction in Latin, music, and the visual arts, becoming skilled as a calligrapher, miniature painter, and musician. When Margherita married and Catherine left court in the later 1420s, she chose a religious life rather than marriage.

She entered a community of women in Ferrara who followed the Franciscan Third Order and lived in common. That house later accepted the Rule of Saint Clare and became a monastery of Poor Clares, known as Corpus Domini of Ferrara. Catherine served there as novice mistress and was regarded as a spiritual guide. She composed a short treatise, The Seven Spiritual Weapons, which describes vigilance, distrust of self, confidence in God, meditation on the Passion, remembrance of one's own death, recollection of the blessings of Heaven, and devotion to Scripture and the Eucharist as means of resisting temptation. The work grew out of her own reported struggles with demonic assault and her visions of Christ and the Virgin. She also produced illuminated manuscripts and panel paintings, including images of the Madonna and Child, which later generations associated with her name.

In 1456 the Franciscan authorities sent her back to Bologna to establish a new Poor Clare monastery, likewise dedicated to Corpus Domini. She became its first abbess and governed the community until her death. Contemporary accounts describe her as an austere but practical superior who continued to paint, write, and instruct novices. She died in Bologna on 9 March 1463. Not long after burial her body was found incorrupt; it was later placed in a seated position in the monastery chapel, where it has remained an object of veneration.

Pope Clement XI canonized her on 22 May 1712. Her feast is kept on 9 March. She is invoked as a patron of artists and of the city of Bologna, and her treatise continued to circulate in Franciscan houses as a manual of spiritual combat. Her combination of courtly education, Poor Clare observance, mystical writing, and artistic production made her one of the better-documented women saints of fifteenth-century Italy.
