Biography

Short Description

Catherine of Bosnia, known in South Slavic sources as Katarina Kosača Kotromanić, was queen consort of the Kingdom of Bosnia in the fifteenth century and afterward a Catholic exile of high rank in Rome. She was born in the mid-1420s, customarily dated to 1424 or 1425, at Blagaj in the domains of her father, Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, the Grand Duke of Bosnia who later took the title Duke (Herceg) of Saint Sava and whose lands in Hum gave rise to the name Herzegovina. Her mother was Jelena Balšić, a daughter of Balša III of Zeta. Precise day and even exact year of birth are not fixed by a contemporary register, and later writers differ slightly. She was raised in a magnate family that rivaled the crown in wealth and autonomy, in a kingdom pressed by Hungarian claims, Venetian coastal interests, internal confessional diversity, and the Ottoman advance.

In 1446 she married King Stephen Thomas (Stjepan Tomaš of the house of Kotromanić). The union reconciled the king with her previously rebellious father and supported Stephen Thomas's policy of closer alignment with the Roman Church after a background connected with the Bosnian Church. As queen, Catherine was noted for Catholic piety and for patronage, especially of the Franciscan friars who were the principal Latin clergy in Bosnia. She and her husband were associated with the foundation and endowment of churches. The couple had two children recorded by name, a son Sigismund and a daughter Catherine. Stephen Thomas died in 1461 and was succeeded by his son from an earlier union, Stephen Tomašević. Catherine, as queen dowager, continued to hold dower lands and a prominent place in the short-lived last years of the medieval Bosnian court.

Ottoman armies overran Bosnia in 1463. The king was captured and executed, and the kingdom ceased to exist as an independent Christian state. Catherine escaped into exile, but her children were seized and brought up as Muslims; her son later appeared in Ottoman service as Ishak-bey Kraloğlu. She first took refuge in the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik), which received her with honor while remaining wary of Ottoman displeasure, and she then sought help from other Christian powers along the Adriatic and in Italy. No restoration followed, and she did not recover her children. By the later 1460s she had settled in Rome under papal protection, living on a pension and continuing to style herself queen of Bosnia.

In Rome she led a devout widow's life and is described in Franciscan and later Catholic tradition as a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis. She appealed repeatedly for a crusade or expedition to recover Bosnia and for the return of her son and daughter to the Christian faith. In a testament dated in October 1478 she left her claims to the Kingdom of Bosnia to the Holy See should her children not revert to Christianity. She died in Rome on 25 October 1478 and was buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli on the Capitoline Hill. Her epitaph named her queen of Bosnia and daughter of the duke of Saint Sava. The original tomb was later lost during rearrangements of the church. Catherine was not formally canonized or beatified by a completed papal process, but she has been venerated especially by Bosnian and Croatian Catholics and by the Franciscans of Bosna Srebrena. Her memory is kept on 25 October, and she is popularly invoked as a patron of Bosnia and Herzegovina and as a figure of fidelity in exile.
