Biography

Short Description

Catherine of Genoa was born Caterina Fieschi in 1447 in Genoa, capital of the Republic of Genoa, the youngest of five children of Jacopo Fieschi and Francesca di Negro. The Fieschi were among the foremost noble houses of Liguria and had already given the Church two popes, Innocent IV and Adrian V, besides many cardinals and bishops; Jacopo himself had served as viceroy of Naples. From childhood Catherine showed a strong attraction to prayer and the cloister. Around the age of thirteen she sought to enter the convent in which her sister Limbania was a religious, but she was refused because of her youth. In 1463, when she was about sixteen, her family arranged her marriage to Giuliano Adorno, of the equally powerful Adorno family, a match intended to ease long-standing factional rivalry in the republic. The marriage was unhappy and remained childless. Giuliano was extravagant, quarrelsome, and unfaithful. After a period of ordinary social life Catherine fell into a prolonged melancholy and spiritual dryness that lasted about a decade.

A sudden conversion in 1473 reoriented her entire life. The traditional account places the turning point on 22 March of that year, when, intending to confess at her sister’s convent, she was overwhelmed by an intense awareness of God’s love and of her own sinfulness. She thereafter gave herself to prayer, fasting, and works of mercy. In time Giuliano also converted; the couple agreed to live in continence, and he later joined the Third Order of Saint Francis. They devoted themselves to the sick poor, above all at Genoa’s great civic hospital of Pammatone. Catherine served there for many years, nursing patients through plague outbreaks (including that of 1493), performing the most menial tasks, and eventually assuming administrative responsibility. Daily Communion, then uncommon for a layperson, became central to her practice. After Giuliano’s death in 1497 she continued at the hospital until her own final illness.

Her interior life was marked by prolonged mystical states that she described as a purifying fire comparable to purgatory: the soul, drawn by love, suffers until every attachment contrary to God is burned away, yet the suffering is inseparable from joy in that same love. She did not compose finished books in her own hand. Her sayings and experiences were recorded by close associates, especially her confessor Cattaneo Marabotto and the layman Ettore Vernazza, and after her death were shaped into the works known as the Treatise on Purgatory and the Spiritual Dialogue. Later scholarship has debated how far the published texts preserve her exact words, but the doctrine associated with her—purgatory as the soul’s encounter with divine love rather than merely external retribution—had a lasting influence on Catholic spirituality.

Catherine died in Genoa on 15 September 1510. She was beatified by Pope Clement X in 1675 and canonized by Pope Clement XII in 1737. Her relics are venerated in the church of the Santissima Annunziata di Portoria (often called Santa Caterina) in Genoa, beside the hospital she had served. Her feast is kept on 15 September. She is invoked by brides, by those in difficult or childless marriages, by victims of infidelity, and by widows, and she remains a principal witness in the Western mystical tradition to the purifying character of divine love.
