Biography

Short Description

Cathróe of Metz, whose name appears in Latin sources as Cadroe, Cadroë, or Cathroe and in Gaelic as Cathróe, was a tenth-century monk and abbot from the kingdom of Alba, later venerated as a saint at Metz in Lotharingia. Almost everything that can be said about him depends on a single near-contemporary text, the Vita Cadroe, written in Latin at the abbey of Saint-Felix (afterwards Saint-Clement) in Metz in the early 980s, probably by a monk of that house and at the prompting of Abbot Immo. The vita portrays him as the son of a Scottish nobleman named Fochertach and of Bania, and it places his birth in Scotland. No contemporary source records the town of his birth or an exact year; estimates that put his birth around 900 are modern inferences from the chronology of his later travels and should not be treated as documented fact. As a child he was entrusted to a kinsman named Bean, described as a priest or abbot, who oversaw his early education.

The vita then sends him to Ireland for more advanced study, naming Armagh, before he conceived the desire to abandon his country for a life of pilgrimage and monastic exile, in the tradition of the Gaelic peregrini. If the royal names in the narrative are historical, his departure from Britain belongs to the 940s. King Constantine II of Scotland is said to have tried to prevent him from leaving. Cathróe next appears at the court of Dyfnwal, king of the Cumbrians (Strathclyde), then on a route through Cumbrian lands toward York, where the hagiographer introduces a Scandinavian ruler of that city, and afterwards at the court of King Edmund I of England. Scholars have long noted that this itinerary fits the politics of mid-tenth-century Britain, including the last years of Constantine II, the kingdom of Strathclyde, Norse York, and Edmund’s reign (939-946), but the vita is a work of sacred biography, not an independent chronicle, and its episodes cannot be verified one by one.

Crossing to the Frankish world, Cathróe is associated with the monastery of Saint-Fursey at Péronne, a foundation with old Irish links, and with the Benedictine abbey of Fleury on the Loire. His lasting work lay in Lotharingia. A group of Gaelic churchmen, among them the Scots Maccallan and Forannan, were then engaged in the restoration of Waulsort Abbey (Walciodorus) in the Ardennes, in the diocese of Liège, and Cathróe is connected with that reforming circle. Bishop Adalbero I of Metz, who occupied the see from 929 until 962, called him to Metz and committed to him the decayed monastery of Saint-Felix outside the walls. There Cathróe became abbot and is credited with restoring Benedictine life. The house was later known as Saint-Clement. In this role he belongs to the tenth-century monastic reform movement in Lotharingia, alongside better-documented figures, though the scale of his achievement is known only through his own legend.

According to the traditional date, Cathróe died at Metz on 6 March 971 and was buried in his abbey. His feast day is 6 March. He was honoured as a saint at Metz from the generation of the vita onward. Like most saints of the tenth century, he was not the subject of a papal canonization; recognition was local and liturgical. He did not become the centre of a large international cult, and no stable list of patronages is attached to his name. Historians value the Vita Cadroe not only as a monument of his memory but as a rare narrative that claims to follow a Scottish pilgrim through Alba, Strathclyde, England, and the monasteries of Francia and Lotharingia in the mid-tenth century, even while they treat its miraculous and rhetorical elements with caution.
