Biography

Short Description

Cecilia Eusepi was born on 17 February 1910 in Monte Romano, in the province of Viterbo in the Lazio region of central Italy, the youngest of eleven children of a farming family. Her father died while she was still a small child, and in the mid-1910s she was sent from Monte Romano to nearby Nepi to live with relatives so that she could receive a fuller education than her home village then afforded. In Nepi she was formed by the Mantellate Sisters, Servants of Mary, whose school and convent life shaped her piety, her Marian devotion, and her early sense that she was called to belong entirely to God. Those who later collected testimony about her childhood described a lively, intelligent girl whose religious practice was already marked by regularity and by affection for the Virgin Mary.

As an adolescent she hoped to enter religious life as a missionary within the Servite family. She was received into the Third Order of the Servants of Mary, taking a name in the Servite tradition and binding herself to the order’s spirit of compassion at the foot of the Cross and of devotion to Mary. That missionary hope was closed when medical examination showed that she had tuberculosis, which made both convent life and departure for the missions impossible. She accepted the diagnosis as the form her vocation would take rather than as its cancellation, and she offered her illness for the Church, for missionaries, and for the conversion of sinners. From then on her life was largely confined to Nepi and to the hidden work of patience in sickness.

In her last years she kept a spiritual notebook at the request of her Servite spiritual director. The pages record, in a simple and sometimes humorous voice, her struggles with pain, her fear of failing in trust, and her desire to remain faithful in a vocation that no longer looked like the one she had imagined. She sometimes referred to herself in self-deprecating terms as a little clown before God and the Madonna, an image that later became closely associated with her memory. Visitors and family recalled her cheerfulness amid decline and an atmosphere of peace around her sickbed. She did not found an institute, write a formal spiritual treatise, or exercise any public office; her reputation rested on this brief, interior fidelity.

Cecilia Eusepi died in Nepi on 1 October 1928 at the age of eighteen. A local reputation for holiness followed her death, and in time a cause for beatification was introduced. After the usual diocesan and Roman processes she was declared Venerable on the strength of a decree of heroic virtues, and Pope Benedict XVI later approved a miracle attributed to her intercession. She was beatified on 17 June 2012 at a ceremony held in Nepi, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding as papal legate. Her remains are venerated in the church of San Tolomeo in Nepi. The Church observes her liturgical memorial on 1 October. She is remembered as a young Italian lay tertiary of the Servants of Mary whose short life, spent in illness rather than in the missions she had desired, was taken as a witness to holiness in hidden suffering.
