Biography

Ceferino Namuncurá was born on 26 August 1886 at Chimpay, on the Río Negro in Argentine Patagonia, the son of the Mapuche cacique Manuel Namuncurá and of Rosario Burgos. His father, a son of the renowned Mapuche leader Juan Calfucurá, had fought in the wars that accompanied the Argentine Conquest of the Desert and afterward accepted settlement and baptism. Ceferino thus grew up at a turning point for the indigenous peoples of the southern plains, when military defeat, displacement, and missionary activity were reshaping Mapuche life. Salesian missionaries were then establishing themselves in Patagonia; the child was baptized by them and raised in a household that had entered the Catholic Church. Seeking an advocate who could move in the world of the Argentine state and of letters, Manuel Namuncurá took his son to Buenos Aires in 1897 and placed him with the Salesians of Don Bosco at the Colegio Pío IX in the Almagro district.

In Buenos Aires Ceferino was remembered not as a prodigy of learning but as a boy of unusual recollection, kindness to weaker classmates, and a clear wish to become a priest in order to serve his own people. His health was always fragile. After years at the Colegio Pío IX he continued Salesian formation in Patagonia, including a period at Viedma, still intending to enter the congregation and the priesthood. In 1904 Bishop Giovanni Cagliero, a Salesian and apostolic vicar in those territories, took him to Italy so that he might study in a climate thought more favorable to his lungs and might know the center of the Catholic Church. He was enrolled at the Salesian college of Villa Sora in Frascati, near Rome, and was received in audience by Pope Pius X. Contemporaries described a reserved, obedient student whose piety and Mapuche origin already attracted notice in Salesian houses.

Tuberculosis, which had long undermined him, worsened in Italy. He was brought into Rome for care and died there on 11 May 1905, still eighteen years old and without having made religious profession or received ordination. He was first buried in Rome. In 1924 his remains were translated to Argentina and laid in the Salesian sanctuary of Mary Help of Christians at Fortín Mercedes in Buenos Aires Province, which became the principal focus of his cult. Popular devotion spread among both criollo and indigenous Catholics, who saw in him a model of youthful virtue and a symbol of the meeting of Mapuche identity with the Catholic faith. He came to be called, in hagiographic language, the lily of Patagonia.

The cause of beatification was introduced in the twentieth century. Pope Benedict XVI authorized the beatification, which was celebrated on 11 November 2007 at Chimpay, his birthplace, with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone presiding as papal legate. Ceferino Namuncurá is commemorated on 26 August. He is widely invoked as a patron of Argentine youth and of the indigenous peoples of Argentina, and he is honored within the Salesian Family as one of its blesseds, though he died as a student and aspirant rather than as a professed religious. He has not been canonized.
