Biography

Short Description

Celedonius, known in Spanish as San Celedonio and in Latin sources as Chelidonius, was a Christian martyr who suffered at Calagurris (present-day Calahorra in La Rioja, Spain) in the late third or early fourth century. He is invariably commemorated together with his companion Emeterius. The principal ancient testimony to their deaths is the Spanish Christian poet Aurelius Prudentius Clemens (c. 348–after 405), himself a native of Calagurris. In a hymn of the Peristephanon, Prudentius celebrates two soldiers who, while serving in the Roman army, openly professed the Christian faith, refused the sacrifices demanded of soldiers, and were imprisoned, tortured, and beheaded. Prudentius presents the martyrdom as a glory of his hometown and attests that their tomb was already a place of pilgrimage by the late fourth century, showing that a local cult was firmly established within a few generations of the events.

No contemporary document records the exact year of the martyrdom. Later tradition commonly placed it in the persecution associated with Diocletian and Maximian, sometimes around 298 or 304, but those dates remain conjectural. Nothing certain is known of Celedonius’s family, birth, or earlier career. Medieval hagiographers, writing many centuries later, identified Celedonius and Emeterius as brothers born in León, members of Legio VII Gemina, who were sent to Calahorra and suffered there. These particulars do not appear in Prudentius and lack independent corroboration; they belong to later legend. Equally legendary are accounts that after the beheading the martyrs’ heads were thrown into the Ebro or otherwise miraculously conveyed to the Cantabrian coast, where they became foundation relics of the church of Santander.

The cult of Celedonius and Emeterius is among the oldest continuously attested martyr cults on the Iberian Peninsula. Their feast on 3 March entered early martyrologies and remains in the Roman Martyrology. The cathedral of Calahorra, associated with the site of their passion and original burial, has long claimed important relics and honors the two saints as principal patrons of the city and of the diocese. In Santander a church dedicated to them existed from the early Middle Ages; the present cathedral still preserves relics attributed to them, and they are co-patrons of the city. Civic and liturgical observances on 3 March have continued in both places for many centuries.

Because so little can be verified about Celedonius as an individual, he stands as a representative of the soldier-martyrs of the late Roman army whose names survived through a vigorous local cult rather than through a detailed biography. Modern historical scholarship accepts the antiquity of the cult at Calahorra, confirmed by Prudentius, while treating the later biographical elaborations with caution. Celedonius is therefore remembered primarily as one of the two soldier-saints of Calahorra whose witness, whatever its exact historical circumstances, inspired one of the most enduring martyr cults of Roman Hispania.
