Biography

Short Description

Katarzyna Faron was born on 24 April 1913 in the village of Zabrzeż in the Nowy Sącz area of Galicia, then a province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and today in southern Poland. Orphaned in childhood, she was raised by relatives who formed her in the Catholic faith. At seventeen she entered the Congregation of the Little Servant Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, a community founded in 1850 by Blessed Edmund Bojanowski for the Christian education of children and service to the rural poor. She received the religious name Celestyna at the motherhouse in Stara Wieś.

After her profession of vows she served in several houses of the congregation as a teacher and catechist. She instructed village children in elementary subjects and in the Catholic faith, work that expressed the congregation’s charism of serving the least educated and the needy. Those who knew her recalled a sister of quiet humility, practical charity, and strong devotion to the Immaculate Virgin Mary.

The German occupation of Poland after 1939 placed religious communities and Polish education under severe restriction. The sisters often continued teaching in secret. In 1942 Sister Celestyna was arrested by the Gestapo. After imprisonment in local jails she was deported in early 1943 to the Auschwitz concentration camp. In the camp she endured forced labor, starvation, and epidemic disease while seeking to sustain fellow prisoners through prayer and small acts of kindness.

Weakened by typhus and tuberculosis, she died in Auschwitz on 9 April 1944, Easter Sunday, at the age of thirty. On 13 June 1999 Pope John Paul II beatified her in Warsaw together with 107 other Polish victims of Nazi persecution, the group known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. They are commemorated together on 12 June. Her life is remembered as a witness of religious fidelity and Christian charity under totalitarian persecution.
