Biography

Short Description

Goffredo da Castiglione, who reigned briefly as Pope Celestine IV, belonged to the noble Castiglioni family of Milan in northern Italy. The year of his birth is not recorded in surviving sources. Traditional accounts describe him as a nephew of Pope Urban III (Uberto Crivelli), another Milanese pontiff of the late twelfth century, though the precise kinship is not independently documented in detail. He was educated in the schools of Paris, a common path for ambitious Italian clerics of his generation, and later became a canon of the cathedral chapter of Milan, the principal ecclesiastical body of his native city.

In September 1227 Pope Gregory IX created him cardinal-priest of the title of San Marco. In the following decade he was promoted to the suburbicarian see of Sabina, becoming cardinal-bishop, one of the most senior ranks in the Sacred College. During Gregory IX’s long struggle with the Hohenstaufen emperor Frederick II, Castiglione served among the pope’s closest collaborators. The conflict, which mixed questions of imperial rights in Italy with the papacy’s claim to freedom of action, dominated Roman politics throughout the 1230s and early 1240s and left the College of Cardinals deeply divided between those willing to treat with the emperor and those determined to resist him.

Gregory IX died in August 1241 while Frederick’s forces threatened Rome. The subsequent election was conducted under duress. Matteo Rosso Orsini, senator of Rome, confined the cardinals in the dilapidated Septizodium palace on the Palatine, in conditions of heat, overcrowding, and poor sanitation that later writers treated as the first true conclave. At least one cardinal died during the confinement, and several others fell seriously ill. On 25 October 1241 the electors chose the aged and already infirm Cardinal-Bishop of Sabina as a compromise, and he took the name Celestine IV.

Celestine IV’s pontificate lasted only about two weeks. He was already a bishop and therefore did not require episcopal consecration, but he was never crowned. Contemporary and later sources agree that he was too ill to exercise government; no significant acts of his brief reign are recorded. He died in Rome on 10 November 1241 and was buried in St. Peter’s Basilica. His death reopened the vacancy. Many of the surviving cardinals left the city, and the Holy See remained unoccupied until the election of Innocent IV in 1243. Because of the extreme brevity of his reign and the absence of a coronation, Celestine IV left no lasting legislative or diplomatic imprint, and he has never been the object of a cultus or of formal beatification.
