Biography

Short Description

Céline of Laon, known in Latin sources as Cilinia or Celinia and in French as Sainte Céline de Laon, was a Christian noblewoman of fifth-century northern Gaul, venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. She is remembered above all as the mother of Saint Remigius (Saint Rémi of Reims), the bishop who baptized the Frankish king Clovis I, an episode of lasting importance for the religious history of the Frankish kingdoms. Almost nothing about her can be established from contemporary fifth-century documents. The principal narrative of her life comes from later hagiography, especially the Life of Saint Remigius written in the ninth century by Hincmar, Archbishop of Reims, a text composed some four centuries after her lifetime and shaped in part by the prestige and claims of the church of Reims.

According to this tradition, Céline was the wife of Emilius (also spelled Aemilius), a man of rank in the district of Laon in what had been the Roman province of Belgica Secunda. Later writers sometimes call him a count of Laon, though that title may reflect later usage rather than a fifth-century office. The couple were said to have remained without children until they were advanced in years. Hincmar recounts that a blind hermit named Montanus prophesied that they would have a son named Remigius, who would restore sight, understood as spiritual illumination, to the people. Céline subsequently gave birth to Remigius. She was also the mother of Principius, who became Bishop of Soissons. Through these two sons the family is linked with the important episcopal sees of Reims and Soissons as well as with the city of Laon. Remigius, according to conventional chronology, was born in the 430s and was consecrated bishop of Reims while still a young man, later playing a central role in the conversion of Clovis and the Franks.

Céline is depicted in the tradition as a woman of marked piety and charity who brought her children up in the Christian faith. Beyond her identity as wife and mother, independent details of her education, household, or public activity do not survive. She is believed to have spent her life in the Laon region. After the death of her husband she is sometimes described as having devoted herself more fully to prayer and good works, though she is not recorded as having entered a religious order. Traditional accounts place her death at Laon around the year 458, which would fall near the time of Remigius’s accession to the see of Reims.

She was honoured locally in the dioceses of Laon, Reims, and Soissons. Her feast day is observed on 21 October. Because she lived in late antiquity, long before the later medieval procedures of papal canonization, her cult rests on ancient diocesan and popular veneration rather than on a formal act by a named pope. She should not be confused with Saint Céline of Meaux, a figure of the later fifth or early sixth century associated in legend with Saint Genevieve of Paris and commemorated on the same date in some calendars. Modern historians treat the biographical story of Céline of Laon with caution: Hincmar’s narrative cannot be verified from fifth-century evidence, and some of its motifs resemble biblical and hagiographical patterns of aged, childless parents. At the same time, Remigius himself is a well-attested bishop of Reims, and the maternal tradition attached to Laon has formed part of the liturgical memory of northern France for many centuries.
