Biography

Short Description

Saint Céline of Meaux (Céline de Meaux) is a Christian holy woman of late antique northern Gaul, commemorated in the Catholic tradition and especially in the historic diocese of Meaux, in what is now the department of Seine-et-Marne in France. She is placed by hagiographical tradition in the fifth century, a time when Roman civic structures in Gaul were giving way to Frankish rule and when organized Christian life among women—consecrated virginity, household asceticism, and charitable work—was taking firmer local shape. No contemporary vita, inscription, or administrative record of her survives. What is known of her rests on later legend, on the continuity of a local cult, and on her traditional pairing with better-attested figures of the same region and century. Precise years of birth and death cannot be established from reliable sources; notices that assign her death to the closing decades of the fifth century are conventional rather than documented.

According to the tradition preserved in the Meaux region, Céline was born at Meaux and remained there as a consecrated virgin. She is remembered as a close friend and spiritual companion of Saint Genevieve of Paris, the fifth-century figure associated with the defence and Christian identity of Paris and with an early circle of devout women in the Seine basin. Whether that friendship is a strictly historical fact or a later hagiographical linking of two holy women of neighbouring cities cannot be demonstrated from independent evidence, but it became the central motif of Céline’s legend: a life of prayer, austerity, and charity lived in the shadow of Genevieve’s more public reputation. She is not described as a nun of a later monastic order, nor as an abbess or foundress; the sources present her as a virgin living a religious life in or near her native city, in keeping with forms of female asceticism known in fifth-century Gaul before the full diffusion of Benedictine and other rules.

Her feast is kept on 21 October. That date is also assigned in some calendars to Saint Cilinia (Céline) of Laon, the noblewoman traditionally identified as the mother of Saint Remigius of Reims and of Saint Principius of Soissons, and wife of Emilius. The two Celines have often been confused or even fused in popular devotion because of the shared name, the shared century, and the shared feast, but careful hagiography treats them as distinct: Céline of Meaux is the virgin associated with Meaux and with Genevieve; Céline of Laon is the married matron of the Laonnois. Nothing in the Meaux tradition presents Céline of Meaux as a wife or mother. She held no episcopal or patriarchal office, was never Bishop of Rome, and left no known writings.

Veneration of Céline remained essentially local. A church or chapel under her invocation existed at Meaux, and her memory was retained in diocesan liturgical books through the Middle Ages. She was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or Tridentine type; like most saints of the first Christian millennium in Gaul, her status rests on ancient popular and episcopal cult (cultus immemorabilis), later tacitly received by the wider Church. No comprehensive list of patronages is securely attached to her name in standard martyrologies, and the place of her burial is not established with precision beyond the general association with Meaux. Historical judgment must therefore remain modest: a fifth-century virgin of Meaux, linked by tradition to Saint Genevieve, commemorated on 21 October, and honoured by a durable but geographically limited cult, about whose inner life and exact chronology the sources do not permit further certainty.
