Biography

Short Description

Saint Acathius (also known as Acacius, Agathius, Achatius, or, in Coptic usage, Agathonas) is an early Christian martyr traditionally identified as a Cappadocian Greek who served as a centurion in the Roman imperial army. He is commemorated in both the Latin and Byzantine churches. Virtually all that is known of him derives from later hagiographical passiones and from brief notices in the Roman Martyrology and Eastern synaxaria; no contemporary administrative or literary source independently confirms the details of his trial. The tradition places his origin in Cappadocia, without naming a specific city, and his military service in Thrace during the opening of the Great Persecution under Diocletian and Maximian.

According to the received account, Acathius was denounced as a Christian at Perinthus (Heraclea) in Thrace. A tribune named Bibianus (or Vivianus) interrogated and tortured him for refusing to sacrifice to the gods. Still unyielding, he was transferred to Byzantium, where the prefect Flaccinus subjected him to further torments. Condemned by imperial authority, he was beheaded. The conventional date assigned to his death is 303, the year in which Diocletian’s first edict against the Church was issued. Some recensions of the legend add that he was crowned with thorns in imitation of Christ’s Passion, a detail later associated with his invocation against headaches.

His cult took root in Constantinople, where his relics were first honoured. In later centuries portions of those relics were translated to the West; a notable shrine developed at Squillace in Calabria, and he came to be numbered among the Fourteen Holy Helpers, the group of saints whose intercession was especially sought in the Rhineland in the later Middle Ages. In that context he is invoked against headaches; as a military martyr he has also been regarded as a patron of soldiers. The Roman Martyrology lists him on 8 May; the Byzantine tradition observes the feast on 7 May. He was never a bishop, pope, or member of a religious order, and nothing reliable is recorded of his family, marital status, or earlier career beyond his rank as centurion. Recognition of his sanctity belongs to the pre-congregational era, when inclusion in martyrologies and the existence of a local cult constituted the Church’s acknowledgment of martyrdom.
