Biography

Short Description

Ceolwulf was an eighth-century king of Northumbria who later entered the monastic community of Lindisfarne and was venerated as a saint. He belonged to the Bernician royal kindred descending from Ida. Later Northumbrian genealogical tradition, reflected in sources used by Bede’s successors and by Symeon of Durham, presents him as a son of Cuthwine (Cutha), of a collateral branch of the ruling house rather than of the line that had recently produced kings such as Aldfrith and Osred. He succeeded King Osric in 729, and contemporary and near-contemporary writers treat him as Osric’s intended heir. No reliable source records his place or date of birth, and nothing certain is known of a wife or children; after his withdrawal from power the kingship passed to a kinsman, Eadberht.

The opening of his reign was politically unstable. Bede, who finished his Ecclesiastical History of the English People in 731 and dedicated it to Ceolwulf, wrote that the beginning and course of the reign were filled with commotions and reverses, and that its end could not yet be known. In 731 Ceolwulf was seized by opponents and forcibly tonsured, a ritual humiliation meant to disqualify him from kingship by making him a cleric; he was restored the same year. Bede’s dedication shows that the king was regarded as a literate and serious patron of the Church: Bede asked him to examine the History critically and to have it copied for wider circulation. The work remains the principal contemporary witness to Northumbrian affairs in Ceolwulf’s lifetime.

In 737 Ceolwulf abdicated and received the monastic tonsure at Lindisfarne, the island house long associated with Aidan and Cuthbert. Eadberht, described as his cousin, succeeded him as king. Later Durham historians, above all Symeon of Durham, remember Ceolwulf as a notable benefactor of Lindisfarne. He is said to have granted the community lands and precious objects, including a golden crucifix and a gospel book, and to have obtained permission for the monks to drink wine or ale, whereas they had previously been limited to milk or water. He spent the remaining years of his life as a monk of that house. These monastic traditions cannot all be controlled from eighth-century documents, but they are consistent with his documented retirement to Lindisfarne and with the later growth of his cult there.

Ceolwulf died in 764, according to the continuation of Bede and to Symeon of Durham, and was buried at Lindisfarne. He was honoured as a saint in the Northumbrian church. In the ninth century Bishop Ecgred of Lindisfarne translated his relics to a church he built at Norham-on-Tweed. Durham later claimed relics of Ceolwulf among its treasures. His feast has been kept on 15 January in Western calendars, and he is recognised as a saint in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican traditions. Beyond Bede, the continuation of Bede, and the Durham historical corpus, the biographical record is thin; no contemporary narrative of his inner life survives, and claims about his birth, marriage, or precise daily monastic observance remain unverified.
