Biography

Short Description

Saint Cerbonius, known in Italian as San Cerbone or San Cerbonio, was bishop of Populonia in Tuscany during the sixth century, in the years of Ostrogothic rule, the Gothic War, and the first Lombard occupation of Italy. Independent contemporary documentation of his life is almost entirely lacking, as is typical for many Italian bishops of this period; what is known comes from later hagiography, local liturgical tradition, and the Roman Martyrology. That tradition presents him as a native of North Africa who left during the persecution of Nicene Christians by the Arian Vandal kings. Together with other African clerics, among them Saint Regulus (San Regolo), he is said to have reached the Tyrrhenian coast and settled at Populonia, an ancient Etruscan and Roman city whose episcopal see covered the coastal district around modern Piombino. There he became bishop. No verified year or place of birth more precise than this African origin has been preserved, and later guesses at a birth date should be rejected.

The episode that dominates his legend concerns Totila, king of the Ostrogoths. Cerbonius was accused before the king on charges that vary in the telling: that he celebrated the Eucharist at dawn rather than at the canonical hour, or that he had otherwise offended Gothic authority. Totila ordered that he be thrown to a bear. The animal did not harm him but licked his feet, a sign read as divine acquittal, and the bishop was released. The story belongs to a familiar late antique pattern of holy men unhurt by wild beasts, yet it is firmly attached to Cerbonius in Tuscan memory and art. It is the principal subject of the marble arca completed in 1324 by Goro di Gregorio for the cathedral of Massa Marittima, and it became the usual attribute of the saint in later painting. Chronologically the incident, if it has a historical kernel, would fall before Totila’s death in 552, in the earlier part of Cerbonius’s episcopate.

After the Lombards entered Tuscany from 568 onward, Cerbonius was driven from Populonia and took refuge on the island of Elba. Tradition holds that he died there on 10 October 575. The people of Populonia recovered his body and brought it back by sea for burial in his own church; later tellings add a calm crossing or miraculous guidance. As Populonia itself declined in the Middle Ages, the civic and episcopal center of Massa Marittima claimed the saint. His relics were translated there, the cathedral was dedicated to him, and he became the city’s principal patron. The sculpted tomb-chest of 1324 still displays scenes from the received life: African origin, the bear, miracles, death, and translation.

Cerbonius was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type. His cult is of the ancient, popular kind, subsequently recorded in the Roman Martyrology, which keeps his feast on 10 October. He remains patron of Massa Marittima and is associated with the old see of Populonia and with the later diocese of Massa Marittima-Piombino. Beyond the outline of an African refugee who served as bishop of a Tuscan coastal see, suffered under Gothic and Lombard power, and died in exile on Elba, little can be verified. Neither marriage nor children are recorded; nor is membership in a religious order. The legend, the cathedral, and the local feast are the form in which the sixth-century bishop has been remembered.
