Biography

Short Description

César de Bus was born on 3 February 1544 in Cavaillon, in the Comtat Venaissin, then a papal territory adjoining the Kingdom of France and now in the French department of Vaucluse. He came from a family of the provincial nobility and received the education of a gentleman. In early adulthood he followed a military career during the French Wars of Religion and later lived as a courtier and poet. Contemporary accounts describe a worldly and dissipated life that lasted into his thirties. That experience left him familiar both with the violence of the age and with the religious ignorance that civil war had deepened among ordinary people in Provence and the Comtat.

In the mid-1570s he underwent a conversion. Illness, the example of pious relatives, and a growing conviction that the Christian faith must be taught systematically to the uninstructed led him to abandon his former way of life. He prepared for holy orders and was ordained a priest in 1582. From that time his principal work was catechesis. He taught children and adults, especially the poor and those in rural districts, using simple methods and organizing regular instruction in Christian doctrine. He worked in Cavaillon and neighbouring towns of the Comtat, including L'Isle-sur-Sorgue, and later in Avignon, seeking to repair the damage done to religious knowledge by decades of conflict between Catholics and Huguenots.

In 1592 he founded the Congregation of the Fathers of Christian Doctrine, commonly called the Doctrinaires, a community of priests whose purpose was the systematic teaching of the catechism, above all to the poor and the uneducated. He also inspired the foundation of a congregation of women, the Daughters of Christian Doctrine, dedicated to the same apostolate. The Doctrinaires spread in southern France and became known for parish catechesis and for schools. In later years de Bus lost his sight and became completely blind, yet he continued to govern his congregation and to encourage its work. He died in Avignon on 15 April 1607.

Local devotion to him persisted in Provence. The cause of beatification advanced in the twentieth century, and Pope Paul VI beatified him on 27 April 1975, presenting him as a model for those who teach the faith. Pope Francis canonized him on 15 May 2022. The Catholic Church observes his feast on 15 April, the anniversary of his death. He is remembered as an apostle of catechesis in the era of the Catholic Reformation.
