Biography

Short Description

Saint Chaeremon served as bishop of Nilopolis, a town in Middle Egypt also known in Greek as Niloupolis, during the first half of the third century. Virtually everything that can be said of him derives from a single contemporary witness: a letter written by Dionysius, bishop of Alexandria (died 264 or 265), to Fabius, bishop of Antioch. That letter was later excerpted by Eusebius of Caesarea in Book VI of the Ecclesiastical History. Dionysius, describing the effects of the imperial persecution in Egypt, called Chaeremon the very aged bishop of Nilopolis, which indicates that by about the year 250 Chaeremon had already reached an advanced age and had held his see long enough to be well known to the Alexandrian church.

The persecution in question was that of the emperor Decius, who in 249 to 251 issued edicts requiring inhabitants of the Roman Empire to sacrifice to the traditional gods and to obtain certificates proving compliance. In Egypt the edict was enforced with particular severity in Alexandria and in the nome capitals. Dionysius reported imprisonments, tortures, and executions, as well as a large-scale flight of Christians into the deserts and the mountainous country east of the Nile. Chaeremon, despite his age, chose flight rather than sacrifice. He withdrew together with his wife into what Dionysius calls the Arabian mountain, the barren highlands between the Nile valley and the Red Sea that Egyptian usage often named Arabia. After their departure they were never seen again. The brethren, Dionysius says, made many inquiries but could learn nothing further of them.

Because Chaeremon vanished in the wilderness during an official persecution, later Christian tradition counted him among the martyrs. Dionysius himself enumerated the deaths that typically overtook such fugitives: some were slain by wild beasts, some died of hunger, cold, or sickness, and others were killed by barbarians or robbers. The Roman Martyrology, drawing on this account, commemorates Chaeremon on 22 December together with many other Egyptian martyrs of the Decian period, explicitly recalling those various manners of death. No separate passio or legendary life of Chaeremon is known to have circulated; his cult rests on the historical notice in Eusebius rather than on later hagiographic embellishment.

Beyond these facts almost nothing can be verified. No writings by Chaeremon survive, and no inscription or papyrus has been securely identified with him. Nilopolis was a relatively minor episcopal see, and the record of its bishops is otherwise extremely sparse. That Chaeremon was married is explicit in Dionysius's letter and is consistent with third-century practice, when clerical celibacy was not yet universally required of bishops in Egypt. The name of his wife is not recorded, nor is it known whether they had children. His birthplace, the date of his consecration, and the precise circumstances of his death remain unknown. He is therefore an obscure but historically grounded figure: an elderly married bishop who, in the mid-third century, disappeared into the Eastern Desert of Egypt rather than comply with the Decian sacrifice, and who was thereafter remembered as a martyr by the churches that read Dionysius and Eusebius.
