Biography

Short Description

Saint Charitina of Lithuania, also remembered as Charitina of Novgorod, was a thirteenth-century Lithuanian noblewoman who became an Orthodox nun and abbess in Novgorod. Almost nothing can be reconstructed of her childhood or immediate family. A full medieval vita has not survived, and the later liturgical and synaxarion notices are brief. Tradition consistently describes her as coming from the still largely pagan Grand Duchy of Lithuania and as belonging to a princely or otherwise aristocratic house, which is why later sources often style her a Lithuanian princess. No reliable source preserves a year or place of birth, and any attempt to supply one would be conjecture.

The middle decades of the thirteenth century were a period of expansion and uneasy diplomacy for Lithuania under Mindaugas and his successors, while Novgorod was a wealthy Orthodox republic and a major monastic centre of the Rus'. Later writers have suggested that Charitina may have been sent to Novgorod in connection with a peace settlement, a hostage arrangement, or a projected marriage alliance, all of which are well attested between Lithuanian elites and their neighbours. No contemporary chronicle, however, names her in such a transaction. What the received tradition does affirm is that she accepted Orthodox Christianity and the monastic life in Novgorod rather than remaining in the pagan Lithuanian milieu.

She entered the convent dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. According to the account preserved in later Orthodox notices, she was chosen abbess (igumenia) of that community in 1255. In that office she would have governed the nuns, sustained the liturgical round, and administered the convent’s property according to the customs of Rus’ monasticism. She died in 1281 and, according to the same tradition, was buried at the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in the Saints Peter and Paul Monastery in Novgorod. No authentic portrait, autograph writing, or contemporary eyewitness narrative of hers is known to survive.

The Eastern Orthodox Church venerates her as a saint, with her principal feast on 5 October. She should not be confused with the fourth-century martyr Charitina of Amisus in Pontus, who is commemorated on the same calendar day and with whom the Lithuanian abbess has sometimes been mixed in popular listings. Because the historical record is so thin, claims about specific patronages, a cycle of miracles, or a formal act of canonization by a named hierarch cannot be verified from surviving sources. Her cult appears to rest on local Novgorodian monastic memory that was later received into the wider Orthodox calendar, and into Lithuanian and Russian pious literature, as that of a Lithuanian noblewoman who embraced monastic life in Novgorod.
