Biography

Short Description

Charles of Blois, known also as Charles de Châtillon, was a fourteenth-century French prince of the blood who ruled as Duke of Brittany in right of his wife and who is venerated in the Catholic Church as Blessed Charles of Blois. He was born in 1319, the son of Guy I of Châtillon, Count of Blois and Dunois, and of Margaret of Valois, sister of King Philip VI of France. His upbringing therefore placed him close to the Valois court in the early years of the Hundred Years' War. In 1337 he married Joan of Penthièvre, daughter of Guy of Penthièvre and niece of Duke John III of Brittany, who had designated Joan as his heiress. When John III died childless in 1341, Charles advanced his wife's claim to the duchy. King Philip VI of France accepted the claim and invested Charles with Brittany, and a substantial part of the Breton nobility and the Avignon papacy likewise favoured the Penthièvre-Blois party. The rival claimant was John of Montfort, half-brother of the late duke, who obtained recognition from Edward III of England. The dispute opened the War of the Breton Succession, fought from 1341 until 1364 as a major theatre of the wider Anglo-French conflict.

Charles showed himself an active commander in the opening campaigns, taking important towns including Nantes and Rennes, but in 1347 he was defeated and captured at the Battle of La Roche-Derrien by an Anglo-Breton force. He remained a prisoner in England, largely in the Tower of London, until 1356. His ransom was set at a very high sum, and his sons were among the hostages given for its payment. Throughout his captivity his wife Joan of Penthièvre continued the war in Brittany and earned a lasting reputation for determination. After his release Charles returned to the duchy and renewed operations against the Montfortists, whose cause had passed to John of Montfort's son, the future Duke John IV, supported by English captains including Sir John Chandos.

Contemporary testimony and the later materials assembled for his beatification portray Charles as a man of severe personal religion. He is described as hearing several Masses daily, wearing a hair shirt beneath his armour, making pilgrimages barefoot, and distributing alms on a large scale. He belonged to the Third Order of Saint Francis and was a notable benefactor of Franciscan houses in Brittany, especially the Cordeliers of Guingamp. Chroniclers friendly to his cause also praised his justice, his care in observing truces, and his attention to the wounded and the poor. These traits of asceticism and charity, rather than any lasting dynastic success, underpinned the cult that formed around him after his death.

On 29 September 1364 Charles gave battle to the Montfort and English army near Auray in southern Brittany. The engagement ended in the destruction of his army, and Charles was killed on the field. The victory secured the duchy for John IV of the House of Montfort and brought the long succession war to a close, although the Penthièvre line retained substantial lands, including the county of Penthièvre, and later again played a part in Breton and French politics. Charles's body was taken to Guingamp and buried in the church of the Franciscan Cordeliers. Miracles were reported at his tomb, and a popular cult developed in Brittany. After centuries of local veneration, Pope Pius X confirmed the cult and beatified him in 1904. He is honoured as Blessed Charles of Blois, a medieval lay ruler whose life combined the violence of dynastic war with documented practices of prayer, penance, and charity.
