Biography

Short Description

Chiara Gambacorti was born in 1362 in Pisa, then an independent maritime republic in Tuscany, and was baptized Tora. She belonged to the Gambacorta family; her father, Pietro Gambacorta, rose to become the principal political figure and effective lord of Pisa in the later fourteenth century. Like many daughters of the Italian urban nobility, she was placed at a young age—about seven—in a monastic setting, the Benedictine house of San Silvestro in Pisa, so that she might be educated and kept in a protected environment. That arrangement did not lead immediately to a lifelong vocation. Her family later took her from the monastery in order to marry her, as was customary when a daughter could serve alliance and status. Around the age of fifteen she was married against her will. Her husband died after a short union of about two years, and she was left a widow before she was twenty.

Widowhood allowed her to resume the religious intention that marriage had interrupted. Pietro Gambacorta at first resisted and wished her to contract a second marriage. Hagiographical tradition records her determination to refuse that path and to seek the cloister. The Dominican Order was then undergoing a movement of observant reform, associated with Raymond of Capua, successor of Catherine of Siena as master of the Dominicans, and with preachers such as Giovanni Dominici. Catherine of Siena herself had spent time in Pisa in the 1370s and had exhorted its rulers and citizens; the city’s religious life was thus already marked by Dominican influence. With her father’s eventual support, a monastery of Dominican nuns committed to a strict common life was founded in Pisa in the early 1380s, known as San Domenico. Tora took the name Chiara (Clare) in religion and became a founding member and later prioress of this community, which is counted among the early houses of observant Dominican women in Italy.

The political fortunes of her family collapsed in 1392, when Jacopo d’Appiano overthrew Pietro Gambacorta. Her father and two of her brothers were killed in the coup. Accounts of Chiara’s life stress that she did not seek vengeance and that she met the disaster with a religious interpretation of forgiveness and patience. She continued to govern and form her nuns amid the instability that followed. In 1406 Pisa was conquered by Florence, ending the republic her father had once ruled; she spent her remaining years in a subject city. Within the monastery she was remembered for penitential practice, attention to the rule, and care for the poor who came to the convent, in the manner expected of a late medieval foundress-prioress.

Chiara Gambacorti died in Pisa on 17 April 1419 and was buried at the monastery she had helped to establish. A cultus grew at her tomb. Centuries later, on 17 July 1830, Pope Pius VIII confirmed that longstanding veneration, which in the procedure of the time constituted her beatification. She has not been canonized. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 17 April. She remains a figure of local Pisan and Dominican memory: a noble widow who entered the observant reform, a prioress whose family was destroyed by urban faction, and one of the women who planted Dominican cloistered life in a more rigorous form in late medieval Tuscany.
