Biography

Short Description

The Child Martyrs of Tlaxcala—Cristóbal, Antonio, and Juan—were three Nahua children from the indigenous republic of Tlaxcala in central Mexico, killed in the 1520s because of their Christian faith and their role in the first wave of evangelization after the Spanish conquest. Tlaxcala had allied with Hernán Cortés against the Mexica of Tenochtitlan, and from 1524 the Franciscan Twelve Apostles of Mexico established schools in which sons of the native nobility were taught Christian doctrine, reading, and writing. The three boys belonged to that first generation of indigenous Christian students. Their stories were recorded by contemporary missionaries, above all the Franciscan Toribio de Benavente (Motolinía) in his Historia de los Indios de la Nueva España, and later entered colonial hagiography as the earliest native martyrdoms of New Spain.

Cristóbal was the son of Acxotécatl, a principal of Atlihuetzía, one of the towns of the Tlaxcalan confederacy. Sent to the Franciscan school, he accepted baptism and became an ardent catechist in his own household, destroying clay and wooden idols and reproaching his father’s continued pagan practices. Acxotécatl, who had received baptism only for political convenience, grew enraged. After a banquet at which he had been drinking, he beat the boy with heavy sticks, burned his body with ocote (pine) torches, and cast him out. Cristóbal died the next day, traditionally in 1527, after asking that his father be forgiven. The Franciscans recovered the body and buried it. Motolinía and other chroniclers presented the death as a martyrdom analogous to those of the early Church, suffered at the hands of a parent who rejected the Gospel.

Antonio, of noble lineage from Tizatlán, and Juan, his younger servant and fellow student, likewise learned Christian doctrine from the friars. In 1529 they attached themselves to Dominican missionaries traveling south toward the Mixteca and the Valley of Oaxaca to preach and to overthrow local cults. According to the received account, the party halted in or near Cuauhtinchan in present-day Puebla. Inhabitants hostile to the destruction of their sacred images attacked the missionaries’ indigenous helpers. Antonio and Juan were killed—struck down with clubs or stones—while still children, traditionally in 1529. Colonial writers emphasized their youth, their willingness to accompany the friars, and their death as a consequence of fidelity to baptism and of assistance in evangelization.

Local devotion to the three children persisted in Tlaxcala and neighboring regions through the colonial period, though a formal cause of canonization was not pursued until the twentieth century. Pope John Paul II beatified them on 6 May 1990 at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, during an apostolic journey, holding them up as the first fruits of Mexican holiness and as models for the young. Pope Francis canonized them on 15 October 2017 in Saint Peter’s Square. Their memorial is kept on 23 September. In the Mexican Church they are invoked especially as patrons of children and of childhood, and they occupy a distinctive place in the religious memory of Tlaxcala as indigenous witnesses from the first years of Christianity in Mesoamerica. Historical reconstruction depends on sixteenth-century missionary narratives, which mix reportage with edifying interpretation; the core facts of their origin, conversion, and violent deaths in the late 1520s are nonetheless consistently attested.
