Biography

Short Description

Christian de Chergé, born Charles-Marie Christian de Chergé on 18 January 1937 in Colmar in the Haut-Rhin, came from a French military family. His father was an army officer, and as a child Christian spent several years in Algeria, then under French rule, an experience that left a lasting impression and an early respect for the country’s Muslim population. After returning to metropolitan France he pursued studies for the priesthood, including formation connected with the Archdiocese of Paris, the Pontifical French Seminary in Rome, and the Institut Catholique de Paris. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Paris in 1964.

A decisive episode in his life occurred during his military service in Algeria from 1959 to 1961, in the Algerian War of Independence. A Muslim friend named Mohamed, a rural policeman, protected him from an ambush and was later assassinated. De Chergé regarded this as a spiritual turning point and a call to a life of presence and dialogue among Muslims. In 1969 he entered the Trappist monastery of Notre-Dame d’Aiguebelle in France. After monastic formation he was sent in 1971 to the small Cistercian community of Notre-Dame de l’Atlas at Tibhirine in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria. He later studied Arabic and Islamology at the Pontifical Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies in Rome, grounding his vocation to live as a monk in a Muslim land.

In 1984 he was elected prior of Tibhirine. Under his leadership the monastery became known for prayer, manual work, a modest medical dispensary, and neighborly relations with surrounding villagers. De Chergé was a leading figure in the Ribât-es-Salam (Bond of Peace), a circle of Christians and Muslims devoted to spiritual encounter. He insisted that the monks’ calling was not proselytism but a humble Gospel presence and friendship, and his chapter talks and writings developed a theology of hospitality that sought to recognize God’s work also in Islam.

When the Algerian Civil War of the 1990s brought threats against foreigners and religious, the community discerned that it would remain with the people it served rather than withdraw to France. In late 1993 and early 1994 de Chergé composed a spiritual testament, to be opened if he were killed, in which he forgave in advance whoever might take his life and distinguished the Algerian people and Islam from the violence of a few. On the night of 26–27 March 1996 he and six fellow monks were kidnapped from Tibhirine by the Armed Islamic Group. Their deaths were announced on 21 May 1996; their severed heads were later found, while their bodies were never recovered. The remains were buried at the monastery of Tibhirine.

De Chergé and his six companions, together with twelve other clergy and religious killed in Algeria between 1994 and 1996, were beatified as the Martyrs of Algeria on 8 December 2018 in Oran, in a ceremony celebrated by Cardinal Angelo Becciu as representative of Pope Francis. His testament and the monks’ choice to stay became widely known, including through the 2010 film Of Gods and Men. He is remembered as a witness to Christian–Muslim dialogue, monastic fidelity, and forgiveness in the face of death.
