Biography

Short Description

Christina of Bolsena, also called Christine of Bolsena and, in Eastern Christian usage, Christina of Tyre or Christina the Great Martyr, is a virgin martyr of the third century whose historical life cannot be reconstructed from contemporary evidence. No inscription, imperial record, or early church historian supplies a verifiable year of birth or death. What survives is a passion narrative, transmitted in Greek and Latin, which later medieval compilers such as Jacobus de Voragine further popularized. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 24 July, and the Byzantine tradition keeps the same date. Western devotion is centered on Bolsena (the ancient Etruscan and Roman Volsinii) in what is now the province of Viterbo, Lazio, Italy; Eastern devotion associates her with Tyre in Phoenicia. Hagiographers have long debated whether these are two localizations of a single legendary cycle or faint memories of more than one martyr.

In the form of the legend attached to Bolsena, Christina was the daughter of a rich pagan official named Urbanus, who shut her in a tower with gold and silver idols so that she might worship them. Converted to Christianity, she smashed the statues and gave the precious metal to the poor. Her father then had her beaten, imprisoned, and subjected to further tortures. After Urbanus died, a magistrate named Dion, and later another named Julian, continued the interrogation. Among the episodes that became standard in art and liturgy are her being thrown into Lake Bolsena with a millstone around her neck, from which she was said to have been rescued, and her death by arrows. The millstone and the arrows became her usual attributes. Parallel Greek texts place the same family names and similar tortures at Tyre rather than in central Italy. Popular modern dates sometimes assigned to her (for example a birth around 290 or a death in 295 or 307) rest on this legendary material, not on independent documentation.

The sanctuary at Bolsena is of considerable antiquity. Catacombs and a basilica dedicated to Santa Cristina mark the traditional site of her burial, and relics attributed to her have been venerated there for many centuries. In 1263 a Eucharistic miracle reported in that church—blood appearing on a corporal during Mass—was later linked to the feast of Corpus Christi, which further increased the fame of the shrine without adding historical data about the martyr herself. Relics or alleged relics have also been claimed by other churches, including a medieval translation connected with the cult at Palermo. Because the passion is late and literary, neither a precise birthplace nor a historically verified chronology can be established; tradition places her in the third century, often under the Tetrarchy.

Christina is honored as a virgin; the sources do not record a husband or children, nor membership in any later religious order. She was neither a bishop of Rome nor a patriarch. Patronage attached to her in later devotion includes the town of Bolsena, millers (from the millstone), archers (from the arrows), and mariners, as well as invocation against mental illness in some catalogues of saints, and she is counted among the patrons of Palermo. Her cult is pre-congregational: she was venerated as a saint by popular and local ecclesiastical custom long before the modern papal processes of beatification and canonization existed.
